Rafael Jodar is a short priced favourite here but was no match for Alejandro Tabilo when they met in February. The Spaniard has come a long way since then, but I think the value remains with Tabilo in Washington.

Rafael Jodar won his first ATP Tour title in April, in Marrakech, before losing to Arthur Fils in the Barcelona semi-finals. Those performances took him into the Top 50 for the first time.

The 19-year-old reached the quarter-finals in his next three events on clay, beaten by Jannik Sinner in Madrid, Luciano Darderi in Rome and Alexander Zverev at the French Open.

The Spaniard made his first appearance on grass at Wimbledon, knocked out by qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki in the third round.

Jodar’s return to hard courts is going well in Washington, beating 8th seed Arthur Fils 7-6 6-3 and Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-2. He was in deep trouble against Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals, coming through 1-6 6-1 6-4 after saving 6/8 break points.

Alejandro Tabilo Form


Alejandro Tabilo lost the Rio de Janeiro final in February to return to the Top 50. He has mainly competed on clay this year, going 9-5 on hard courts and 0-3 on grass.

The 29-year-old was last seen in Estoril where he was beaten in his opening match, going down 6-4 6-4 to World No.427 Tiago Torres.

The Chilean is playing well in Washington, beating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 4-6 6-4 before a 6-3 7-6 victory over Terence Atmane. He came back to beat 2nd seed Ben Shelton 4-6 7-5 6-4 in the quarter-finals, saving four break points at 4-4 in the second set.

Alejandro Tabilo is ahuge outsider here despite taking out Ben Shelton and thrashing Rafael Jodar in February. There have been a lot of upsets this week and another one wouldn’t surprise in the semi-finals.
