Daniil Medvedev, former world No. 1 and two-time runner-up at Halle, enters the tournament with mixed form—recent setbacks in 's-Hertogenbosch and Roland Garros contrast with strong early-season results. He faces Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who achieved a career-high ranking after a consistent year but has struggled against top 10 opponents, especially on grass. This is their first meeting. Given Medvedev's mediocre recent level and Etcheverry's fighting spirit, expect a close encounter favoring Medvedev, but a longer match is likely.

Daniil Medvedev has enjoyed plenty of success in Halle over the years, reaching the final here in both 2022 and 2025. With significant ranking points to defend, motivation should not be an issue. However, his performances in 's-Hertogenbosch last week were far from convincing, raising questions about his current level heading into this tournament.

Momentum Favors Medvedev

  • Etcheverry owns a 0–19 career record against Top 10 players.
  • He holds a 3–7 record in opening-round matches at tour-level grass events.
  • Medvedev has a 4–1 record in opening-round matches at Halle.
  • He owns a 23–6 record against players outside the Top 20 this year.

Etcheverry Seeks Grass-Court Success Again

Tomas Martin Etcheverry has been one of the more consistent players on tour this season, but his results have dipped in recent weeks. He suffered opening-round exits in both Rome and Roland Garros, with both defeats coming against lower-ranked opponents.

Despite those recent setbacks, the Argentine has enjoyed a solid year overall. He captured the title in Rio de Janeiro, reached the semifinals in Buenos Aires and made the fourth round in both Miami and Madrid. Those results helped him achieve a career-high ranking of No. 25 last month.

This will be Etcheverry's second appearance in Halle. On his debut last year, he reached the quarterfinals, recording his first multiple-win run at a tour-level grass-court event. Apart from Halle, he has not won a tour-level grass-court match outside Wimbledon.

Former Runner-Up Returns to Halle

Daniil Medvedev began his grass-court season in 's-Hertogenbosch last week, where he reached the semifinals. He came through back-to-back three-set matches against Thijs Boogaard and Marin Cilic before falling to Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets.

It was a welcome response after another disappointing Roland Garros campaign. Medvedev suffered a first-round exit in Paris for the second consecutive year and for the seventh time in his ten appearances at the tournament.

The Russian produced several strong results earlier in the season, winning titles in Brisbane and Dubai, finishing runner-up at Indian Wells and reaching the semifinals in Rome. Those performances helped him return to the Top 10 and strengthen his position among the leading players on tour.

This will be Medvedev's sixth appearance in Halle. Apart from an opening-round loss on his debut in 2021, he has won at least one match in each of his other four appearances, including runner-up finishes in 2022 and 2025.

Verdict

Medvedev's poor level in Hertogenbosch opens the door for Tomas Martin Etcheverry to keep things competitive, even if his own record against top players on grass is not particularly strong. Backing a Medvedev win + over 20.5 games in the match and over 2.5 sets looks like the preferred route, given Medvedev's underwhelming form and Etcheverry's ability to hang around in matches.
