Janice Tjen is tipped to defend her title at the final Chennai Open, held from 2–8 November 2026 at the SDAT Tennis Stadium. The Indonesian top seed is favoured due to her strong record in hot, humid conditions and her confidence on these courts. Magda Linette, a 2022 finalist, and Linda Fruhvirtova, the inaugural Chennai champion, are also considered strong contenders. Mananchaya Sawangkaew’s familiarity with Asian conditions makes her a notable outsider. The tournament’s last edition in Chennai adds extra motivation for all players.

The Chennai Open says goodbye this year. The 2026 edition runs at the SDAT Tennis Stadium from November 2 to 8, and it will be the last WTA event in Chennai: the tournament’s licence moves to the Philippines in 2027. That makes this week the end of a short but memorable run for women’s tennis in India.

Defending champion Janice Tjen is the top seed. The Indonesian won the 2025 title without being seeded, and she now comes back as the player to beat. Magda Linette, the 2022 runner-up, is seeded third, and Linda Fruhvirtova, who won the first Chennai Open as a 17-year-old in 2022, is unseeded and in the top half.

The champion takes home $37,390 and 250 ranking points. Panna Udvardy, Mananchaya Sawangkaew and Polina Kudermetova are also among the seeds, and three Indian wildcards, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, Vaishnavi Adkar and Sahaja Yamalapalli, will have home support in Chennai’s final WTA week.

Tournament Overview

The Chennai Open is a WTA 250 event played on outdoor hard courts. Its roots go back to the WTA Indian Open, which began in Hyderabad in 2003 and later moved to Bangalore, where Serena Williams won the 2008 title. After a 13-year gap, women’s tour tennis returned to India in Chennai in 2022, and the event came back again in 2025. This year is the last Chennai edition.

The draw has 32 players, the top seeds play first-round matches because there are no byes, and the final is on Sunday, November 8.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

The champion earns $37,390 and 250 ranking points, and the runner-up takes $22,125 and 163 points. A first-round loss is worth just 1 point.

With the season close to its end, these are among the last points available, and they can decide where players start the 2027 season and whether they get into Grand Slam main draws directly. The pressure is greatest on Janice Tjen: she won here 12 months ago, so she has all 250 of those points to defend.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

The SDAT Tennis Stadium has outdoor hard courts, and we estimate they play at medium pace. Conditions will probably matter more than the surface itself. Chennai is hot and humid in early November, and it’s the northeast monsoon season, so rain delays could disrupt the schedule and leave some players with two matches in a day.

Players who handle heat and humidity and can grind out long rallies usually do well here. The last two champions, Linda Fruhvirtova and Janice Tjen, both won with consistency from the baseline rather than big serving.

Recent Champions

Three players from past Chennai finals are in this year’s draw. Defending champion Janice Tjen beat Kimberly Birrell in straight sets in the 2025 final, the first WTA title of her career. Linda Fruhvirtova and Magda Linette met in the first Chennai final in 2022, which Fruhvirtova won in three sets, so both have played their best tennis at this venue.

Before the tournament moved to Chennai, the Indian Open had champions such as Sania Mirza, who won at home in Hyderabad in 2005, and Serena Williams, who won in Bangalore in 2008.

Top 8 Seeds

Janice Tjen starts her title defence against American wildcard Katherine Hui, and she could meet sixth seed Polina Kudermetova in the quarter-finals. Second seed Lilli Tagger appears to have withdrawn, and Lucrezia Stefanini has taken her spot in the bottom section, where she opens against Elsa Jacquemot.

The pick of the first round is Linda Fruhvirtova against a qualifier, with eighth seed Katarzyna Kawa or home wildcard Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi waiting in the second round. Indian wildcards Vaishnavi Adkar and Sahaja Yamalapalli are both in the bottom quarter and play Jodie Burrage and Simona Waltert respectively.

Players to Watch

Janice Tjen
The top seed won her first WTA title here 12 months ago, and since then she has become a regular in the top 50. She’s at home in hot, humid conditions, and her draw looks kind until a possible quarter-final against Polina Kudermetova. With 250 points to defend, she has plenty of motivation.

Magda Linette
The Pole is the most experienced player in the draw and reached the final on this court in 2022. Her consistent, counter-punching game suits the medium-paced hard courts. She opens against a qualifier, and her quarter looks open.

Linda Fruhvirtova
Fruhvirtova won the first Chennai Open as a teenager and comes back unseeded. She has struggled for consistency since then, but she clearly likes this venue, and getting past Katarzyna Kawa in the second round would open up her section.

Mananchaya Sawangkaew
The Thai fifth seed is used to playing in Asian heat and humidity. She’s a steady baseliner who rarely beats herself, and she could be the danger to Linette in the third quarter.

Panna Udvardy
The fourth seed is at her best in long baseline rallies, which should suit Chennai’s conditions. She leads the second quarter, but Fruhvirtova could be waiting for her in the quarter-finals.

Verdict

Janice Tjen is our pick to retain her title in the last edition of the Chennai Open. The top seed has the highest ranking in the draw, the most confidence on this court and conditions that suit her game.

Magda Linette is the experienced alternative and returns to the venue where she reached the 2022 final. Linda Fruhvirtova, the first Chennai champion, is a long shot at 70.00 but has the history here to justify a small stake, and Mananchaya Sawangkaew’s comfort in Asian conditions makes her a live outsider in the bottom half.
