The 2026 WTA Guangzhou Open runs October 26 – November 1, bringing together a strong field including wildcards Venus Williams and 2019 champion Sofia Kenin. With last year’s winner Ann Li absent, top seed Daria Snigur and fourth seed Lilli Tagger, the bookmakers' favorite, are among the leading contenders. The event features challenging opening round matchups and offers significant ranking points as the season closes. With hot and humid conditions favoring aggressive play, the tournament is set for exciting action as both young talents and established stars clash.

Two American wildcards bring star power to the 2026 Guangzhou Open. Venus Williams and 2019 champion Sofia Kenin both feature at the WTA 250 event, which runs at the Nansha International Tennis Center from October 26 to November 1.

With 2025 winner Ann Li playing in Tokyo, a new champion will be crowned. Daria Snigur leads the seeds, ahead of Janice Tjen, who won the doubles title here last year, Lanlana Tararudee and Lilli Tagger.

The opening round has some eye-catching matches. Williams faces fourth seed Tagger in a clash of generations, while Katerina Siniakova arrives straight from the Osaka final to face third seed Tararudee. Former world No. 2 Paula Badosa is also in the draw as the fifth seed.

Tournament Overview

Guangzhou has hosted a WTA event since 2004, when Li Na won the inaugural title and became the first Chinese woman to lift a WTA singles trophy. The tournament has moved between five venues in the city and has been played at the Nansha International Tennis Center since its return in 2023, after the pandemic cancelled the 2020–2022 editions.

The 2026 edition is the tournament’s 20th. There are no byes in the 32-player draw, so every seed plays from the first round, and the final is on Sunday, November 1.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

Guangzhou’s champion takes home $37,390 and 250 WTA ranking points. The beaten finalist earns $22,125 and 163 points, and a semi-final run is worth 98.

With the season almost over, these points matter most to players on the edge of the top 32. Top seed Daria Snigur is ranked 40th, so a title here could move her closer to a seeding at the Australian Open in January.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

Guangzhou is subtropical, and late October can still bring warm, humid days, which make the ball fly a little quicker and test players’ fitness late in the season. Left-handers have thrived at the Nansha venue: Wang Xiyu won in 2023 and Olga Danilovic in 2024, both with lefty power from the baseline.

Recent finals have been one-sided, with the 2023 and 2024 champions dropping just six games between them in their title matches. For bettors, that points to the best player in form running away with the title rather than a close, attritional finish.

Recent Champions

Sofia Kenin is the only former champion in the draw. She came from a set down to beat Samantha Stosur in the 2019 final, months before her breakthrough Australian Open title. Magda Linette, the 2023 runner-up, is also back, but 2023 champion Wang Xiyu withdrew through illness before the draw was played.

Top 8 Seeds

This is the most evenly matched field of the week. Top seed Daria Snigur is ranked 40th and eighth seed Katie Volynets 73rd, so no seed can count on an easy path. Asia has two seeds to cheer, Indonesia’s Janice Tjen and Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee, and both face dangerous openers.

Players to Watch

Lilli Tagger
The bookmakers make the fourth seed the title favourite, and it’s easy to see why. The young Austrian, a former French Open junior champion, has a big, aggressive game that suits quick courts. First, though, she has to handle the occasion against Venus Williams in one of the most anticipated first-round matches of the week.

Daria Snigur
The top seed and former Wimbledon junior champion arrives as the highest-ranked player in the field, at world No. 40. Her flat, low hitting is effective on hard courts, and she opens against Anna Bondar, with a possible second-round meeting with 2019 champion Sofia Kenin to follow.

Katerina Siniakova
Siniakova arrives with the most momentum in the draw after reaching the Osaka final. Her opener against third seed Lanlana Tararudee could be one of the best matches of the first round, but the quick turnaround from Japan makes fatigue a real risk.

Paula Badosa
The former world No. 2 is seeded fifth and has the highest ceiling of anyone in the field. Her opening match against qualifier Carol Young Suh Lee is manageable, and if her body cooperates, Badosa has the power to dominate a draw of this level.

Venus Williams
At 46, the seven-time Grand Slam champion is still turning up on tour and drawing crowds. Her first-round match against fourth seed Lilli Tagger is one of the most anticipated of the week, as one of the sport’s greatest names takes on one of its brightest young talents.

Verdict

Lilli Tagger is the bookmakers’ favourite and our pick in Guangzhou. The young Austrian has the power to dominate this field once she gets past Venus Williams in round one. Osaka finalist Katerina Siniakova is the other title contender, arriving with plenty of momentum.

For longshots, former world No. 2 Paula Badosa and top seed Daria Snigur offer value at double-figure prices.
