The two Ningbo finalists barely have time to unpack before the Toray Pan Pacific Open begins in Tokyo. Elena Rybakina and Leylah Fernandez are both in the draw at the WTA 500 event, which runs at the Ariake Coliseum from October 26 to November 1, and they’re in the same quarter.

Rybakina is the top seed, with Wuhan champion Maja Chwalinska seeded second, ahead of Diana Shnaider and defending champion Belinda Bencic. Bencic beat Linda Noskova in last year’s final and begins her title defence against Ann Li or Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Home fans have plenty to cheer. Naomi Osaka, the 2019 champion, is the seventh seed but faces a tough opener against Jasmine Paolini, while wildcards Himeno Sakatsume and Moyuka Uchijima also fly the Japanese flag.

Tournament Overview

The Pan Pacific Open is one of the oldest events on the WTA Tour. It was first held in 1973, when Billie Jean King won the inaugural title, and its champions list includes Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Martina Hingis, who holds the record with five titles. It was played indoors on carpet until 2007, then moved to outdoor hard courts at Ariake in 2008. It has been a WTA 500 event since 2022.

The 2026 edition is the tournament’s 52nd. The 28-player draw gives byes to the top four seeds, so Rybakina, Chwalinska, Shnaider and Bencic all begin in the second round. The singles final is on Sunday, November 1.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

Tokyo’s champion will earn 500 WTA ranking points and a $185,500 cheque, with $114,500 and 325 points going to the runner-up. Reaching the semi-finals is worth 195 points.

Defending champion Belinda Bencic has the most at stake. She is defending the 500 points from last year’s title, so an early exit would cost her significant ground in the rankings as the season draws to a close.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

Tokyo is played on DecoTurf, the same surface family used at the US Open, and it tends to reward clean, aggressive hitting. The WTA 500 era backs that up: big hitters Liudmila Samsonova, Veronika Kudermetova and Zheng Qinwen won three of the four titles before Bencic’s early-ball timing paid off last year.

The Ariake Coliseum centre court has a retractable roof, so rain is less likely to disrupt the schedule than at many outdoor events. For bettors, first-strike players with strong serves deserve extra respect here.

Recent Champions

Two former champions are in this year’s draw. Belinda Bencic returns as defending champion, ten years after losing the 2015 final to Agnieszka Radwanska. Naomi Osaka has the deepest Tokyo history of anyone in the field: she won the title in 2019, when it was played in Osaka, after losing the final in 2016 and 2018.

Since the tournament became a WTA 500 in 2022, no player has won it twice, and every final has been won in straight sets.

Top 8 Seeds

Rybakina is the only top-10 player in Tokyo, and the gap to the rest is clear: second seed Maja Chwalinska is ranked 11th, after her Wuhan title lifted her up the rankings. Seeds three to eight sit between 13th and 20th, and two of them, Naomi Osaka and Alexandra Eala, will have big crowds behind them in Japan.

Players to Watch

Elena Rybakina
The world No. 1 eased doubts about her foot injury by reaching the Ningbo final. The quick turnaround to Tokyo is the main concern, but a first-round bye buys her an extra day of rest. On these fast courts, she’s the player to beat.

Leylah Fernandez
Fernandez arrives in the best form of her autumn. She beat Elise Mertens, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Marie Bouzkova on her way to the Ningbo final. Unlike Rybakina, she has no bye, so she faces wildcard Himeno Sakatsume just after a long week. A potential quarter-final against Rybakina looms if she gets through.

Maja Chwalinska
The French Open finalist turned her breakthrough season into silverware by winning in Wuhan, and she arrives as the second seed with a fresh confidence boost. Her variety and lobs troubled every opponent in Wuhan, and she has had a full week’s rest.

Naomi Osaka
The 2019 champion has the toughest opener of any seed against Jasmine Paolini, but the home crowd at Ariake can lift her. If she gets through, a section with Eala and Shnaider is very winnable.

Belinda Bencic
The defending champion’s form is the big question. She lost early in Ningbo to Katarzyna Kawa, and she has won only a handful of matches since August. Last year’s title shows how well she plays here, though, so writing her off would be risky.

Verdict

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina is our pick to win in Tokyo. She showed her fitness with a run to the Ningbo final, and the fast DecoTurf courts suit her serve.

Home favourite Naomi Osaka is the main danger, with the Ariake crowd behind her. For longshots, Wuhan champion Maja Chwalinska and in-form Ningbo finalist Leylah Fernandez are worth backing.
