Brisbane Lions vs Fremantle Dockers Preview
Brisbane will bounce back from a shock defeat with a win when they take on the ladder leaders, Fremantle, at the GABBA in AFL Round 12.
The heavyweight clash pits last year’s premiers, Brisbane, up against the current ladder leaders, Fremantle, who are a game clear of their nearest rival with a 10-1 win-loss record in 2026.
The Lions come off their biggest loss since 2017 when going down by 88-points to GWS last weekend and simply had no answers to the Giants, who kicked 14 goals to none in the third term.
But expect a fierce response from Brisbane back on their home deck, where they have traditionally been one of the hardest sides in the competition to beat. The Lions have built much of their recent success around contest, territory and their ability to lock the ball inside forward 50, and they will look to bring the game back to those fundamentals against Fremantle.
Their recent form has clearly dipped, but there is enough class and experience through the midfield and forward line to suggest they can lift sharply in a high-pressure Thursday night clash.
The challenge for Brisbane will be limiting Fremantle’s ability to control territory and generate repeat inside 50 entries through pressure and contested possession. The Dockers have thrived in chaotic, contested games this season and have worn teams down late with their depth and running power. Brisbane, however, are a very different proposition at the GABBA and should be able to generate far more scoreboard pressure if they can clean up their ball use exiting congestion and avoid the costly turnovers that have plagued them over the past fortnight.
The Lions also match up reasonably well against Fremantle’s key strengths. Lachie Neale remains in elite touch through the midfield, while Charlie Cameron, Kai Lohmann and Cam Rayner give Brisbane the ability to score quickly once momentum swings their way. Fremantle have been outstanding this season, but this shapes as the type of response game Brisbane have built their recent era on, particularly at home where they have won the past four against the Dockers by an average of 60 points.
Take Brisbane to bounce back with a statement
Round 12 win at home, while Lachie Neale should continue his strong recent form with another 30+ disposal performance. Charlie Cameron looms as a major threat inside forward 50.
- Brisbane claimed the most recent outing against the Dockers by 57 points late last season.
- The Lions have won the past four against Freo at the GABBA by an average of 60 points.
- Charlie Cameron has kicked 16 goals in the past six rounds.
- Lachie Neale is averaging over 30 disposals in the past seven rounds.
Head to Head
Brisbane have won three of the past four against the Dockers, including the Round 23 fixture at Optus Stadium last season by 57 points. The Lions have won the past four matches between the two sides at the GABBA.
Standout player performances in recent head to heads have come from;
- Lachie Neale (Lions)- 25+ disposals in his past seven against his former side at an average of 31 per game
- Caleb Serong (Dockers)- 25+ in his past six against the Lions, including 46 in the Round 1 clash in 2024.
- Josh Treacy (Dockers)- five goals in his past two outings against Brisbane
- Logan Morris (Lions)- four goals in the most recent h2h
- Charlie Cameron (Lions)- 2+ goals in nine of his past 10 against Freo
The reigning premiers have suffered big losses in their past two matches, going down by 41 points to Geelong in Round 10 before the capitulation against GWS last weekend. They have won six of 11 this season and are still searching for consistency in their bid for a third straight premiership.
The bigger issue for Brisbane has been around contest and territory. Against GWS they were beaten badly once the game opened up, turning the ball over in dangerous areas and allowing repeat inside 50 entries. The Lions are still capable of scoring quickly through their forward half talent, but their contest method and defensive balance behind the ball has dropped away compared to previous seasons.
There are still positives within the Lions setup, particularly through the midfield and forward line. Lachie Neale continues to lead from the front and had 29 disposals and seven clearances against GWS, while Cam Rayner and Kai Lohmann combined for six goals.
Neale is averaging 31 disposals in the past eight rounds and has hit the 30+ mark in five of his past seven, registering 27 and 28 in the others. Darcy Wilmot has gone 25+ in three of his past four matches, while Cameron has kicked 2+ goals in his past six.
Brisbane Lions Team News
Brisbane escaped the loss to GWS without any fresh injuries and are hopeful of regaining Jarrod Berry and Noah Answerth. Ryan Lester missed the Giants match with a calf issue and a decision on his availability will be made during the week. Despite the poor result last weekend, there is unlikely to be a dramatic overhaul at selection given the short turnaround and the club’s focus on rediscovering form and cohesion quickly.
Fremantle sit on top of the ladder with a 10-1 win-loss record after their 30-point win over St Kilda. Their ability to absorb pressure before blowing sides away late has become one of the defining features of their 10-match winning streak and they wore down Hawthorn the week prior to score by 15 points.
While St Kilda led early in the last term, Fremantle’s dominant front-half pressure and defensive accountability eventually wore the Saints down. The Dockers finished with a 61-45 advantage in inside 50s and were able to turn the match into the contested style that has suited them throughout 2026.
Murphy Reid continued his breakout campaign with one of the best performances of his young career, finishing with 30 disposals, 14 score involvements and two goals. The 19-year-old has hit 30 disposals in his past two matches, while he has kicked at least one goal in each of his past four.
Andrew Brayshaw and Karl Worner have found plenty of the footy in the last two rounds by registering 25+ disposals, while up forward Josh Treacy has kicked 2+ goals in his past five outings and Jye Amiss has booted nine from his last three games.
