Hawthorn Hawks vs Port Adelaide Power Preview
Hawthorn will advance to a 5-1 win-loss record against Port Adelaide but the 45.5-point line looks a touch too steep against a Power side that has historically matched them well through the midfield.
This shapes as a fascinating contrast between Hawthorn’s elite defensive system and Port Adelaide’s ability to at least break even, if not win, patches around stoppage.
The Hawks have built their 4-1 start on pressure, territory and aerial control, and come off a 40-point win over the previously unbeaten Western Bulldogs, dominating the clearances 34-16 in that match, with Jai Newcombe’s 14 setting the tone.
Where this game becomes more interesting from a betting perspective is Port’s midfield quality. The Power lost to St Kilda by 14 points in Gather Round but finished off well in the second half with a few structural tweaks.
They come in with some momentum and Zak Butters, Ollie Wines and Jason Horne-Francis are still capable of troubling the Hawks at stoppage, with Port’s recent record against Hawthorn suggests they can make this scrappy enough to stay within the big line.
The key tactical difference, though, is what happens once the ball leaves the contest. Hawthorn defend the air exceptionally well with Tom Barrass, James Sicily and Josh Battle all in excellent form, and that back six should be able to blunt Port’s limited forward options.
The Total Points Under is also a stand out bet. Port Adelaide have averaged just 67 points in their past six visits to Marvel Stadium, and against a Hawthorn defence that is controlling intercept marks and preventing opposition talls from dictating aerially, it is hard to see them producing a big score.
Even if Port can edge some clearance phases through Butters and Wines, Hawthorn’s ability to reset behind the ball and force wide entries should drag the scoring down in the
Round 6 clash.
Look for Port to stay competitive enough to cover, the Total Points Under and in player props, Jack Ginnivan (Hawthorn) 20+ disposals and Ollie Wines (Port) 25+ all line up well with how this game is likely to unfold.
- Hawthorn have a 4-1 win-loss record, the Power are 2-3
- Port Adelaide have averaged just 67 points in their past six visits to Marvel Stadium
- Ollie Wines had 26 disposals last weekend and has had 25+ in his past two matches against Hawthorn
- Jack Ginnivan has had 20+ disposals in three of his past four matches, collecting 19 in the other
Head to Head
Port Adelaide inflicted plenty of pain on Hawthorn with four wins on the trot, including a one-point heartbreaker in Round 10 of 2024 when the Hawks led by 11 points with 30 seconds on the clock, before suffering a three-point defeat in the Semi Final that same season.
Last year, the two sides split each fixture, with the Power scoring by 30 points in Gather Round before the Hawks finally got some revenge with a 38-point win in Launceston. This will be the first match in Melbourne since 2021 and just the second since the 2014 Preliminary Final.
Jack Gunston has kicked nine goals in his past two matches against Port Adelaide, while Mitch Georgiades has kicked 2+ goals in two of his past three for the Power.
Hawthorn sit at 4-1 in 2026, rebounding from a 27-point Opening Round loss to GWS with three straight MCG wins before the 40-point victory over the previously unbeaten Western Bulldogs in Gather Round.
Their strengths are built on a high-pressure, intensity-driven game style, with strong intercept marking and forward-half territory control. They consistently generate inside 50 opportunities and it was Jack Gunston and Mitch Lewis that snagged three goals apiece in the win over the Dogs.
Gunston sits second on the league goalkicking table with 19 for the season and has kicked 3+ in each match, while the injury-free Lewis is gaining confidence by the week and has 2+ in his past two.
Jai Newcombe had 28 disposals and 14 clearances against the Bulldogs and is averaging 26 this season, hitting the 25+ in four of five. Jack Ginnivan also had 28 and has had 20+ in three of his past four, collecting 19 in the other.
Hawthorn Hawks Team News
Mabior Chol will miss after injuring his hamstring against the Bulldogs. It will be interesting to see if the Hawks recall Calsher Dear, who has been languishing in the VFL this season. Will McCabe was listed as an emergency last weekend and may come under consideration, while pick 23 from last year’s draft, Aidan Schubert, kicked five in the VFL in his last outing and is a sneaky chance for a debut. Jack Scrimshaw was managed against the Bulldogs and is expected to be available.
Port Adelaide sit 2-3 and have gone loss-win-loss-win-loss so far. They went down to St Kilda in Gather Round by 14 points, despite dominating the inside 50 count at 60-39 and compiling more scoring shots in the 9.13 to 12.9 scoreline. A slow start cost them, as well as some composure in key moments.
Zak Butters lifted his side with 31 disposals and a goal, while Jason Horne-Francis picked up 26 and two majors. Butters has had 30+ in his past three matches, while Mitch Georgiades has booted 12 goals this season and has kicked 2+ in every match.
The Power are yet to face a top-eight side this season. They travelled to Melbourne once in 2026 for a win over Richmond a fortnight ago at the MCG, their only win in their past five visits to Melbourne.

There were no injuries for the Power to come out of the match against St Kilda. Tom Cochrane, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Will Lorenz are among those with solid SANFL form and will be considered.
