The Sydney Swans are favored to secure a decisive victory in the upcoming Sydney Derby against the GWS Giants. With a strong record, including five wins against GWS in the past six matches, the Swans top the AFL ladder. Isaac Heeney remains a standout, consistently scoring multiple goals. Though GWS recently ended a three-game losing streak, they face significant challenges, including injuries and a short recovery period. The Swans, with minimal changes expected to their lineup, are set to cover a 24.5-point line with total match points likely exceeding expectations.

Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants Preview

Sydney Swans can make a big statement with the first Sydney Derby of the year predicted to be a clear-cut victory. Already top of the ladder, the Swans should be up to the task of covering a 24.5-point line.

  • Sydney have won five of their past six matches against GWS.
  • Isaac Heeney has kicked 10 goals this season, hitting the 2+ in every match he has played.
  • The Swans top the AFL ladder with four wins from five matches and a percentage of 175.5.
  • More injury concerns for the Giants.

Head to Head Stats

GWS were 44-point winners the last time the two sides played, overcoming a 28-point half-time deficit to kick 12 goals to one after the main break.

The Swans were 14-point winners at the SCG earlier in 2025 and had won five in a row before the slip-up late last year, including the past three at the SCG.

Sydney Swans Lead The Way

Sydney sit on top of the ladder with a 4-1 win-loss record after their 32-point win over the Gold Coast Suns in Gather Round.

They have registered some big winning margins so far and sit with a healthy percentage of 175.5, averaging 116 points per game.

Isaac Heeney starred against the Suns with 33 disposals and two goals, following on from his four-goal haul the week prior in the Swans’ 128-point win over the West Coast Eagles.

Justin McInerney had 27 disposals against the Suns and has averaged 26 this season, the highest of any Swan.

GWS Giants Get Much Needed Win

The Giants picked up a much-needed win in Gather Round against a disappointing Richmond outfit, blowing the Tigers away with an 8.2 to 2.2 first term before eventually winning by 56.

That snapped a run of three straight losses and it was led by a midfield group that ran riot, including Finn Callaghan (37 disposals), while Aaron Cadman (four goals) and Brent Daniels (three) fired up forward.

The 131 points the Giants registered was their best score of the year, but it will be interesting to see if they can get anywhere near that against a Swans outfit that will bring a much higher level of pressure.

In the three matches prior to the Tigers win, they averaged just 61 points per game.

Team News

Sydney Swans' Callum Mills copped a knee to the back last weekend but was able to play out the game. Angus Sheldrick will be available to return from suspension, but the Swans are unlikely to make too many changes to their starting 23.

Tom Papley looks back to full fitness and his form around goal adds another dangerous layer to the Swans’ forward pressure.

GWS' Aaron Cadman and Brent Daniels were key inclusions last week when returning from injury and had an immediate impact. Cadman, however, will be back on the sidelines, as will Stephen Coniglio, with that pair picking up concussions.

Brent Daniels and Toby Bedford’s return did help restore some pressure and speed inside 50, but the Giants now lose Cadman’s structural presence ahead of the ball.

The Giants also face the challenge of the five-day turnaround, which only adds to the difficulty of facing the ladder leaders away from home.

Verdict

Swans to cover the line in a match that goes above the total points. Heeney to be on fire again.
