In the ATP Munich 2026 second round, Alexander Zverev faces Gabriel Diallo. Zverev, a three-time Munich champion, is expected to use his superior clay court skills to overcome Diallo, who has yet to secure a victory against a Top 10 player. Despite Diallo's recent strong form, winning 39 of his last 40 matches, Zverev's experience and home advantage on clay make him the favored contender. Diallo's performance against top-tier players remains a concern, as he struggles to break through in significant tournaments.

Gabriel Diallo has never beaten a Top 10 player and he faces a tough task against Alexander Zverev in Munich. Zverev has not been convincing, but the German can win in straight sets in his home event on clay.

Zverev Chasing Fourth Title in Munich

Alexander Zverev is 19-6 on the ATP Tour this year, four of those defeats coming against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. He lost to Alcaraz in the Australian Open semi-finals.

The German got to two more semi-finals in Indian Wells and Miami, beaten by Sinner on both occasions.

The 28-year-old came through two tough encounters in Monte Carlo, getting past Cristian Garin and Joao Fonseca in 3 sets. He met Sinner in the semi-finals once again, unable to save four break points in a 6-1 6-4 defeat.

Zverev is a three-time champion in Munich but had to do it the hard way in the first round. He overcame Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3 3-6 7-6, saving 1/4 break points.

The 28-year-old was disappointed with his serve against the Serbian: “I was really serving poorly the entire match, so I gave him a lot of looks on second serves. At some point he was playing like a wall, he wasn’t missing.

“Obviously today the temperatures don’t help an aggressive style of tennis. It’s tough to hit a winner, but in the end I won and that’s the most important thing.”

Diallo Still Outside the Top 30

Gabriel Diallo broke into the Top 50 in June but has been unable to take the next step. He is 6-10 this year which includes a 1-5 record against Top 50 opponents.

The Canadian hasn’t reached a quarter-final in nine events. Switching to clay yielded two first round defeats, beaten 6-2 6-2 by Alex Molcan in Bucharest and 6-2 6-3 by Joao Fonseca in Monte Carlo.

The 24-year-old took care of business in Munich, beating World No.208 Vitaliy Sachko 6-1 6-2 in 76 minutes.

Verdict

Alexander Zverev is chasing a fourth title in Munich and should have too much clay court experience for Gabriel Diallo. I am backing the German to win in straight sets.
