Ann Li reached her maiden WTA 1000 quarterfinal after defeating Janice Tjen in straight sets in Wuhan, 6-1, 7-6. She fired 11 aces and saved all six break points she faced to secure the victory.
The American produced a major upset in the previous round by defeating three-time champion Aryna Sabalenka from a set down. It was the third top-10 win of her career and her second in 2026 alone.
Before this season, Li had recorded multiple main-draw wins at a WTA 1000 event in the same tournament only twice. However, she has now won consecutive matches at this level on four occasions in 2026, including this week, highlighting her progress at the highest tier of the tour.
Aside from a solid clay-court season, Li struggled to find consistency and momentum for much of the year. However, she has shown signs of improvement during the North American swing and has now won at least two matches in each of her last four events. She enters this quarterfinal with a 2-2 record at this stage of tour-level tournaments in 2026.
