Arthur Fils Form


Fils recently returned from a six month layoff due to a back injury. He got to the quarter-finals in Montpellier where he lost to Felix Auger Aliassime.

The Frenchman lost to Alex de Minaur in the first round in Rotterdam but immediately improved in Doha. He got past Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik in straight sets on his way to the final, beaten 6-2 6-1 by Carlos Alcaraz in 50 minutes.

Fils has won more than 63% of his 2nd serves in Indian Wells. He led Dino Prizmic 6-2 3-2 when the Croatian retired before beating Marton Fucsovics 6-3 7-5 and Felix Auger Aliassime 6-3 7-6, his serve broken once.

The 21-year-old talked about the fourth round victory: “[I am most pleased] with the way I finished the match. Everyone is good at the start of the match, everyone can play great tennis.

“But when it matters the most, that is when you can see you are either a great competitor or back down and today I showed I was a tough competitor.”

Zverev had a positive Australian Open campaign. He served for the match against Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals but couldn’t close it out, going down in 5 sets.

The German disappointed in Acapulco, breezing past Corentin Moutet before a narrow 3 sets second round defeat to Miomir Kecmanovic.

Zverev beat 6-3 6-4 in his opening match in Indian Wells before getting past Brandon Nakashima 7-6 5-7 6-4, saving 4/5 break points. He was back on it against Frances Tiafoe, saving two break points in a 6-3 6-4 victory.

Verdict

Arthur Fils is on the fast train back to the Top 20 and beat Alexander Zverev in Miami last year. Zverev’s 2nd serve has not been convincing in his previous two matches, Fils to upset the odds in Indian Wells.
