Sabalenka Keeps Title Defense Momentum

Aryna Sabalenka secured her quarterfinal spot in Madrid after coming back to defeat Naomi Osaka 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. She was a set and a break down before regaining full control of the match.

This is her fourth consecutive quarterfinal in Madrid and her fifth in her last six appearances here. She converted each of her previous four quarterfinal runs into finals.

The Belarusian has won 26 of her 27 matches this season and reached the final in all four of her previous tournaments, lifting the title in three of them. She has also already defended two titles this year and is now chasing a third.

The 27-year-old has won 14 of her last 16 quarterfinal matches on tour, all since the start of 2025, showing her remarkable consistency and big-match ability.

Overall, Sabalenka holds a 21-11 record in WTA 1000 quarterfinals, including an excellent 6-1 mark on clay. Her only loss on this surface at this stage came against Qinwen Zheng in 2025.

Baptiste Reaches Maiden Clay Quarterfinal

Hailey Baptiste defeated world No. 12 Belinda Bencic to reach the quarterfinals in Madrid, winning 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. She served for the match and held five match points in the second set but had to go the distance before closing it out in the decider.

This is her maiden tour-level quarterfinal on clay. Before this week, she had never won more than two matches on this surface in a tour-level event.

The American has made strong progress this season, reaching her maiden tour-level semifinal in Abu Dhabi and her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Miami, along with a third-round run at the Australian Open.

With this Madrid run, Baptiste will climb a few more spots in the rankings, reach a new career high, and make her top-30 debut next week. She enters this quarterfinal with a 1-2 record in tour-level quarterfinals.

Verdict

Hailey Baptiste has been playing impressive tennis and continues to show her competitive level in recent months. Aryna Sabalenka, however, is maintaining her usual dominant intensity and remains the clear favorite. Still, with Baptiste’s strong serve, she has the ability to push Sabalenka and make the match competitive.
