Fernandez Powers Into Quarterfinals

Leylah Fernandez moved into the quarterfinals in Madrid with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ann Li. Earlier in the week, she also beat Julia Grabher in straight sets and came back from a set down to defeat world No. 16 Iva Jovic.

This is a very encouraging run for the Canadian, who won only two clay-court matches last year. She has now reached back-to-back quarterfinals on clay for the first time, giving her strong confidence moving forward.

Before the clay swing began, Fernandez had a difficult stretch, winning only three matches across her first eight tournaments and suffering five opening-round exits.

This is her fourth WTA 1000 quarterfinal and her first since 2024. She lost her previous three at this level in Guadalajara in 2023 and Doha and Cincinnati in 2024.

Andreeva Chases Deep Madrid Run

Mirra Andreeva survived a dramatic battle against Anna Bondar to stay alive in Madrid, winning 6-7, 3-6, 7-6. She nearly let a 5-1 lead slip in the deciding set and also lost a 3-0 advantage in the final tiebreak before closing it out.

This is her third consecutive quarterfinal in Madrid after reaching the same stage in 2024 and 2025, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff respectively.

After a strong start to the season in Australia, the Russian struggled with early exits during her title defenses in Dubai and Indian Wells. Since returning to clay, however, she has won 10 of her last 11 matches, including the title in Linz and a semifinal in Stuttgart.

Andreeva has played eight WTA 1000 quarterfinals in her young career. Apart from her titles in Dubai and Indian Wells last year, she lost the other six, and notably all came against top-10 opponents. With a more favorable matchup this week, she will look to go even deeper.

Verdict

Leylah Fernandez has recently found some momentum after a difficult stretch, while Mirra Andreeva continues to grind out strong results on clay. Considering both players’ ability on this surface and their performances at this level, Andreeva holds the edge in what should be a tight clash.
