ATP Athens 2025 – Tournament Preview

For the first time, Athens joins the ATP calendar with the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Hellenic Championship, replacing Belgrade as a late-season ATP 250 stop. Played from November 2–8, 2025, the event will be staged on indoor hard courts at the historic Telekom Center Athens, previously used for the 2004 Olympics.

The tournament’s debut comes with a marquee name at the top of the draw — Novak Djokovic, returning to action for the first time since Shanghai and looking to fine-tune his form before the Nitto ATP Finals. Behind him, Lorenzo Musetti enters chasing a Turin qualification berth, while a pack of young contenders led by Luciano Darderi, Brandon Nakashima, and Alexandre Muller aim to close their seasons with a statement.

The event closes the European indoor swing just before the Nitto ATP Finals, making it an important stop for players fine-tuning their form and chasing final ranking points.

Playing Conditions

The Telekom Center Athens offers a true indoor hard-court setup, using Greenset surfaces similar to those in Turin and Paris. The courts are expected to play medium-fast, favoring clean strikers and aggressive servers, though the indoor setting eliminates weather factors like wind or sun.

Temperatures inside the arena will be climate-controlled, ensuring consistent bounce and rhythm, while the crowd is expected to bring a lively Greek atmosphere. The late-season timing also means many players arrive physically taxed, which could reward efficient servers and strong returners able to finish points quickly.

Top 8 Seeds

  1. Novak Djokovic (World No. 5)
  2. Lorenzo Musetti (World No. 8)
  3. Luciano Darderi (World No. 27)
  4. Brandon Nakashima (World No. 33)
  5. Alexandre Muller (World No. 44)
  6. Nuno Borges (World No. 46)
  7. Alexei Popyrin (World No. 47)
  8. Fabian Marozsan (World No. 48)

Players to Watch

Novak Djokovic – Playing his first ATP 250 since winning Geneva in May, Djokovic uses Athens as a tune-up ahead of the ATP Finals. The goal is rhythm, not ranking points, but even at partial intensity, he remains the title favorite.

Lorenzo Musetti – Fatigued after a long season, Musetti competes here only because his Turin hopes are still alive. If Felix Auger-Aliassime wins Paris, the Italian will likely withdraw, but if not, expect one last determined push.

Alexei Popyrin – Possesses the serve and first-strike power to thrive on these courts, though recent form has dipped. Needs to rediscover rhythm early to become a real factor in Athens.

Stefanos Sakellaridis – The young Greek prospect steps into the spotlight with home support behind him. Having made big strides at Challenger level, he will aim to prove he belongs on the main ATP stage.

Verdict

Djokovic enters as the heavy favorite, and with his experience and focus ahead of the ATP Finals, he should be trusted to control this field if fully engaged. Musetti remains a solid pick for a deep run if he decides not to withdraw. For value seekers, both Alexei Popyrin and Stefanos Sakellaridis present interesting longshot options to reach the quarterfinals or score early upsets.
