The 2026 Swiss Indoors Basel kicks off October 26–November 1, with emotional farewells as Stan Wawrinka plays his final home event and Novak Djokovic returns on a wildcard. Ben Shelton headlines a packed ATP 500 field, which guarantees a new winner as last year’s champion Joao Fonseca does not defend. The fast indoor courts will favor big servers, and Shelton is the top pick, challenged by Rafael Jodar and in-form Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The event features no byes, high stakes for ATP Finals qualification, and a €2.58 million prize pool.

Basel is set for an emotional week. Stan Wawrinka plays the final tournament of his career on home soil, and Novak Djokovic arrives on a wildcard, as the 2026 Swiss Indoors gets underway at the St. Jakobshalle from October 26 to November 1.

Ben Shelton, the 2024 runner-up, leads the ATP 500 field as top seed, ahead of Arthur Fils, Rafael Jodar and Djokovic. With 2025 champion Joao Fonseca absent, Basel is guaranteed a new winner.

The first round doesn’t hold back. Djokovic faces Ugo Humbert, Taylor Fritz meets Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Fils opens against 2023 finalist Hubert Hurkacz. Wawrinka gives the home crowd a moment to savour against eighth seed Jiri Lehecka.

Tournament Overview

The Swiss Indoors was founded in 1970 by Roger Brennwald, who still runs the event today. It has grown into Switzerland’s biggest annual sporting event. Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Pete Sampras have all lifted the trophy, but Basel belongs to Roger Federer. The former ball boy won his hometown title a record 10 times and reached 15 finals.

The 2026 edition is the tournament’s 55th, and it has been an ATP 500 since 2009. All 32 players start in the first round, as there are no byes. The singles final is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, at 3:30pm local time.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

Basel is the richest event we’ve previewed this week. The champion earns €483,335 and 500 ATP ranking points, while the runner-up takes €260,025 and 330 points. Even a semi-final run is worth 200 points.

With the ATP Finals field almost settled, those points could be decisive for players still chasing Turin. Taylor Fritz came into the week 13th in the Race, and a deep run in Basel is one of his last real chances to close the gap. First-round losers leave with no ranking points, so there’s no soft landing in this draw.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

Basel has long been one of the quicker indoor stops on the ATP calendar, and recent results show it. Felix Auger-Aliassime won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023 behind his serve. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard served his way past Ben Shelton in the 2024 final, and Joao Fonseca’s first-strike power carried him to last year’s title.

Every final since 2022 has finished in straight sets, with three tiebreaks across those four title matches. For bettors, big servers deserve respect, and tiebreak markets are worth a look in matches between strong servers.

Recent Champions

The last three champions, Auger-Aliassime, Mpetshi Perricard and Fonseca, are all missing, so the only former Basel winner in the draw is Novak Djokovic, who won in 2009 and lost the 2010 final to Federer.

Three recent runners-up are back, though: top seed Ben Shelton (2024), Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (2025) and Hubert Hurkacz (2023), who meets Arthur Fils in the first round.

Top 8 Seeds

Bublik’s late withdrawal with a knee injury means Casper Ruud moves in as the ninth seed. Seeds two to six are separated by just four ranking places, and Arthur Fils, Rafael Jodar, Djokovic, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Taylor Fritz are all ranked between 10th and 14th. Several of them face former top-10 players in round one, so there are no easy openers.

Players to Watch

Ben Shelton
The top seed is having the best season of his career, which includes reaching his first major final at the US Open. He was a Basel finalist in 2024 and has the serve to dominate on these quick courts. His third-round loss in Shanghai is the only recent blip.

Novak Djokovic
At 39, Djokovic returns to Basel for the first time since 2011. He won the title on his debut in 2009, and he’s 19-8 this season and 11th in the Race to Turin, chasing a record 19th ATP Finals qualification. Ugo Humbert, a lefty with four indoor titles, is a dangerous first opponent.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Last year’s Basel runner-up arrives in the form of his life after winning his first Masters 1000 title in Shanghai, where he beat Jodar in the final. He opens against Zizou Bergs, and confidence won’t be an issue.

Arthur Fils
The second seed is seventh in the Race and closing in on Turin. His powerful game suits indoor courts, but Hubert Hurkacz, the 2023 Basel finalist and a huge server, makes this one of the toughest openers in the draw.

Rafael Jodar
The third seed reached the Shanghai final two weeks ago and is ninth in the Race to Turin, with qualification within reach. He makes his Basel debut against Alejandro Tabilo, their fourth meeting of 2026. His excellent returning gives him a way to beat the big servers who usually thrive here.

Verdict

Top seed Ben Shelton is our pick in Basel. He reached a US Open final this season and has a serve built for these quick courts. Rafael Jodar, fresh from the Shanghai final, is the main threat from the bottom half.

For longshots, Shanghai champion Alejandro Davidovich Fokina arrives in the form of his life, and Jiri Lehecka is unbeaten indoors this year.
