The 2026 Erste Bank Open in Vienna, running October 26 – November 1, features a standout ATP 500 draw, including Alexander Zverev (who can become world No. 1), Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev. With defending champion Jannik Sinner absent, a new winner is guaranteed. The event boasts over €2.7 million in prize money, rewarding consistency on its indoor hard courts. All seeds must play from round one, setting up heavyweight first-round clashes. The article’s main conclusion is that Alcaraz is favored, but Zverev and de Minaur are key threats.

Alexander Zverev arrives at the Erste Bank Open with a chance to make history. The top seed is guaranteed to become world No. 1 for the first time if he reaches the quarter-finals in Vienna, where the ATP 500 event runs at the Wiener Stadthalle from October 26 to November 1.

Carlos Alcaraz returns to Vienna for the first time since 2021 as second seed, with Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and Alex de Minaur also seeded. Eight of the ATP’s top 16 are in the draw. Two-time champion Jannik Sinner isn’t defending his title, so a new winner is guaranteed.

The first round is packed with big names. Alcaraz faces 2024 finalist Karen Khachanov, Frances Tiafoe meets Lorenzo Musetti, and Grigor Dimitrov takes on Cobolli, while Zverev opens against Next Gen wildcard Martin Landaluce.

Tournament Overview

The Vienna Open has been a fixture of the indoor season since 1974, when Vitas Gerulaitis won the first title. It was played on carpet for more than two decades before switching to indoor hard courts in 2000, and it has been an ATP 500 since 2015.

The champions list includes Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Austria’s greatest player, Thomas Muster, famously never won it, despite reaching three finals.

The 2026 edition is the tournament’s 52nd. There are no byes in the 32-player draw, so every seed, including Zverev and Alcaraz, plays from the first round. The final is on Sunday, November 1.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

Vienna is the richest ATP 500 event of the week, with the champion banking €523,305, about €40,000 more than the Basel winner, plus 500 ranking points. The runner-up takes €281,540 and 330 points, and a semi-final is worth 200.

The stakes go well beyond prize money this week. Zverev is playing for the world No. 1 ranking, while Medvedev, Cobolli, de Minaur, Tiafoe and Paul are all fighting for the last places at the ATP Finals in Turin.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

The Wiener Stadthalle tends to reward complete baseliners rather than pure servers. That shows in the recent champions list: Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have won four of the last five titles between them, all with world-class consistency from the back of the court.

Finals here are often tight. Three of the last four went the distance, including Sinner’s comeback against Zverev last year. For bettors, quality usually wins out in Vienna, so the top seeds deserve more trust than at a quicker event like Basel.

Recent Champions

Three former champions are in the draw: Andrey Rublev (2020), Alexander Zverev (2021) and Daniil Medvedev (2022). Zverev and Medvedev have also both lost finals here since, Zverev to Sinner last year and Medvedev to Sinner in 2023. Karen Khachanov, the 2024 runner-up, and Frances Tiafoe, the 2021 finalist, complete a field packed with Vienna experience.

Top 8 Seeds

This is the strongest draw of the week, with six top-10 players among the seeds. The opening round is brutal: seventh seed Tommy Paul faces former champion Andrey Rublev, and Frances Tiafoe meets Lorenzo Musetti, so at least two big names will be out by Tuesday.

Players to Watch

Carlos Alcaraz
The bookmakers’ favourite returns to Vienna for the first time since 2021. He lost early in Shanghai to Zizou Bergs, so he’ll want to bounce back quickly, and he leads first-round opponent Karen Khachanov 6-0 head-to-head. Tommy Paul is a possible quarter-final opponent.

Alexander Zverev
The top seed has it all to play for. Reaching the quarter-finals guarantees him the world No. 1 ranking for the first time. He won here in 2021 and lost a three-set final to Sinner last year, so Vienna clearly suits him.

Daniil Medvedev
The 2022 champion and 2023 runner-up arrives straight from defending his Almaty title, and he’s sixth in the Race to Turin. He’s in Alcaraz’s half, but his record indoors makes him dangerous to anyone. He opens against Daniel Merida.

Alex de Minaur
De Minaur is 10th in the Race and needs points to hold off Tommy Paul and the chasing pack for Turin. His speed and consistency suit the Stadthalle, but qualifier Tomas Machac is a dangerous first opponent, and there’s no easy start.

Jakub Mensik
The eighth seed is one of the most dangerous young players on tour, with a huge serve that thrives indoors. He opens against a qualifier and is priced as a genuine outsider.

Verdict

Carlos Alcaraz is our pick to win in Vienna. He’s the class of the field and the bookmakers’ favourite, with a perfect record against his first-round opponent.

Top seed Alexander Zverev is the main threat, with world No. 1 on the line and a strong Vienna record. For longshots, Alex de Minaur has Turin points to fight for, and Jakub Mensik’s big serve makes him dangerous indoors.
