Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t dropped a set at the Australian Open but Alexander Zverev is his toughest test yet.

The German is capable of winning a set in Melbourne, but stopping the World No.1 over 5 sets is a different story.

Alcaraz Flawless in Melbourne

Carlos Alcaraz claimed eight titles last year, winning the French Open and US Open to reclaim the World No.1 spot from Jannik Sinner.

The Spaniard started the season with Samuel Lopez as his new coach following the departure of Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Alcaraz hasn’t dropped a set at the Australian Open, beginning with victories over Adam Walton, Yannick Hanfmann and Corentin Moutet. He won 68% of his 2nd serves and saved 1/2 break points in a 7-6 6-4 7-5 victory over Tommy Paul.

The World No.1 dismantled Alex de Minaur 7-5 6-2 6-1 in the quarter-finals, saving 5/7 break points. The 22-year-old said: “I’m just really happy with the level that I’m playing every match, since the first round.”

“I’ve been increasing my level each match. I was talking with my team about being patient, because I want all the things right now. But they told me to be patient, that the level will come. Today I felt really comfortable, playing great tennis, which I’m really proud about.”

Zverev Getting it Done in Australia

Alexander Zverev has been a Top 3 player since September 2024 but is yet to win a Grand Slam. He remains a long way off Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the rankings.

The German had a mixed start to the season at the United Cup, beating Tallon Griekspoor 7-5 6-0 before a 6-3 6-4 defeat to Hubert Hurkacz.

Zverev didn’t do it easy at the Australian Open, getting past Gabriel Diallo, Alexandre Muller and Learner Tien in 4 sets. He was strong in the fourth round, saving 1/2 break points is a 6-2 6-4 6-4 victory over Francisco Cerundolo.

The 28-year-old defeated Learner Tien 6-3 6-7 6-1 7-6 in the quarter-finals, winning 65% of his 2nd serves and saving all three break points.

He hit 24 aces in the victory that were a big part of the win, Zverev saying: “Learner from the baseline was playing unbelievable. I don't think I've played anyone who plays that well from the baseline for a very long time."

“Without my aces, I probably would not have won today. I'm obviously very happy with my serve, just generally happy to be back in the semis.”

Verdict

Alexander Zverev has a respectable 6-6 record against Carlos Alcaraz and beat the Spaniard at the 2024 Australian Open.

I am backing the German to win a set but be unable to stop Alcaraz’s mission in Melbourne.
