The Strasbourg battle between Daria Kasatkina and Liudmila Samsonova is shaping up as one of the week’s most intriguing openers. Kasatkina, buoyed by a recent WTA 125 win at La Bisbal, seems poised to turn around her season after a rough patch and multiple early exits. In contrast, Samsonova, despite her strong history in Strasbourg, has been battling inconsistency and early losses this season. The momentum now favors Kasatkina, who looks best positioned to advance in this matchup.

Kasatkina Looking To Build On La Bisbal Success

Daria Kasatkina has struggled significantly since her nationality change last year. While she has not faced major physical problems, maintaining consistency mentally has been difficult during this period.

She ended last season early after playing only a limited number of tournaments in the second half. This year, she is still trying to rediscover her previous level after winning only four matches across nine tour-level events, including six opening-round exits, which pushed her outside the top 70 rankings for a period.

However, Kasatkina recently found some confidence again by winning the WTA 125 title in La Bisbal a few weeks ago. She will hope to use that run as motivation to rebuild momentum during the remainder of the clay season.

This will be her second appearance in Strasbourg. Last year, she made her debut at the event but lost to Emma Raducanu in straight sets.

Samsonova Faces Important Stretch Of Season

Liudmila Samsonova has struggled badly since the start of the 2026 season. She showed some encouraging signs recently by reaching the second round in each of her last three clay-court events, although she failed to progress further.

The 27-year-old suffered seven opening-round exits in her first nine tournaments of the year. Apart from quarterfinal appearances in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi, she also endured a six-match losing streak between Abu Dhabi and Linz during that difficult stretch.

Despite the disappointing results, Samsonova has managed to remain around the top 20 in the rankings. However, she faces an important period over the next few weeks and could lose significant ranking points without improved performances.

This will be her third appearance in Strasbourg, where she has enjoyed strong success previously. She reached the semifinals in 2024 and the final last year, and she will hope to continue that momentum again this week.

Verdict

Daria Kasatkina recently lifted the WTA 125 title in La Bisbal, which is an encouraging sign after her struggles on tour. Liudmila Samsonova has a strong record in Strasbourg, but her recent form and ongoing struggles suggest she may not be in a position to repeat that success this year, which makes Kasatkina the favorite in this matchup.
