Anna Kalinskaya and Maja Chwalinska face off in the French Open quarterfinals. Kalinskaya, coming off a dramatic win against Potapova, has experience and recent strong performances, but no tour-level titles. Chwalinska, a qualifier, is riding confidence, having won 14 of her last 16 clay matches. This is their first meeting, and while Kalinskaya is the favorite, Chwalinska’s surge on clay suggests a closer contest than the odds indicate. The 'over games' betting market offers interesting value as this matchup promises drama and high-level tennis.

Underdog Spirit Meets Experience

  • Anna Kalinskaya holds a 0–1 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals.
  • She owns a 9–2 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.

  • She holds a 2–3 career record against Top 50 players on clay, with both victories coming this week.

Kalinskaya Denies Potapova in Thriller

Anna Kalinskaya moved into the quarterfinals after defeating the in-form Anastasia Potapova in three sets at the French Open, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. She showed tremendous resilience, saving the match after Potapova served for it twice and then recovering from 1-4 down in the deciding-set tiebreak to complete the comeback.

This is Kalinskaya's best result on clay in her career. Before this tournament, she had played four previous main-draw appearances at Roland Garros and won only one match across them. She had also never won more than three main-draw matches on clay before this week.

It has also been the best clay season of her career. Apart from an opening-round loss to Dalma Galfi in Madrid, she produced solid results throughout the swing, reaching the quarterfinals in Charleston and the third round in Rome.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a steady season overall, winning 17 of her 27 matches. Most of her defeats have come against elite opposition, with seven of her 10 losses this year coming against Top 20 players.

This is only Kalinskaya's second Grand Slam quarterfinal. Her previous appearance came at the 2024 Australian Open, where she lost to Qinwen Zheng after winning the opening set. She is also 0-3 in tour-level clay-court quarterfinals.

Qualifier Marches Into Last Eight

Maja Chwalinska secured her spot in the quarterfinals after defeating home favourite Diane Parry in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. She saved the only break point she faced and converted three of the six break opportunities she created.

The Pole has now won seven matches in Paris, with six of those victories coming in straight sets. With this run, she becomes only the fourth Polish woman in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Chwalinska has now won 14 of her last 16 matches on clay, a stretch that includes titles at WTA 125 Oeiras and W75 Saint-Gaudens. The results reflect the confidence and momentum she has built over the past two months.

The 24-year-old produced her breakthrough tour-level result earlier this year in Cluj-Napoca, where she reached the quarterfinals before losing to Emma Raducanu. With this run in Paris, she is set to make her Top 50 debut next week.
