Marta Kostyuk knocked out four-time champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open. She trailed by a break twice in the opening set but responded immediately on both occasions before taking control of the match and dominating the second set.
Kostyuk will be especially pleased with the result considering she lost to Swiatek in her only previous Round of 16 appearance at Roland Garros back in 2021. That match ended in a straightforward defeat, making this victory a significant milestone in her Paris journey.
With this win, the Ukrainian has extended her clay-court winning streak to 16 matches, a run that includes titles in Rouen and Madrid. It is an impressive achievement for a player who had never previously won more than five consecutive main-draw matches on clay at any level.
She started the season strongly with a runner-up finish in Brisbane, but an injury suffered at the Australian Open disrupted her momentum and sidelined her for the next two months. After a difficult return during the Sunshine Double, she found her best tennis once the clay season began.
This is only the second Grand Slam quarterfinal of Kostyuk's career. Her first came at the Australian Open in 2024, where she lost a tight three-set match to Coco Gauff.
