Mirra Andreeva enters the French Open quarterfinal against Sorana Cirstea as the slight favorite, thanks to her exceptional clay-court form this season (19 wins in 22 matches) and recent historic achievements, including becoming the youngest player to make three straight Roland Garros quarterfinals since Hingis. Meanwhile, Cirstea, in her final season and playing her first French Open quarterfinal in 17 years, brings momentum and experience but remains winless at Grand Slam quarterfinals. Andreeva’s consistency on clay gives her a notable advantage, though a closely contested match is expected.

Andreeva Keeps Building on Strong Clay Season

Mirra Andreeva defeated Jil Teichmann in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals at the French Open. She took early control in both sets and, despite being broken twice, finished the match comfortably.

With this run, Andreeva becomes the youngest player to reach three consecutive Roland Garros quarterfinals since Martina Hingis achieved the feat between 1997 and 1999. She reached the semifinals here in 2024 after defeating Aryna Sabalenka, but her run ended at this stage last year against Lois Boisson.

After a strong start to the season, the Russian struggled through the Middle East and Sunshine Double swings, failing to defend her two WTA 1000 titles. However, she has rediscovered her best level on clay, winning 19 of her 22 matches on the surface and reaching at least the quarterfinals in all five clay-court events she has played this year.

Andreeva now owns a 10-13 record in tour-level quarterfinals, including a 5-6 mark on clay. Three of those five clay-court quarterfinal victories have come this season, highlighting her growing strength on the surface.

She has played three previous Grand Slam quarterfinals in her young career. She converted her first into a semifinal run here at Roland Garros in 2024 but lost her next two quarterfinal appearances, at Roland Garros in 2025 and against Belinda Bencic at Wimbledon last year.

Romanian Chasing First Grand Slam Semifinal

Sorana Cirstea secured her place in the quarterfinals after defeating Xiyu Wang in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. She was tested in the second set, losing serve three times and squandering a 5-2 lead, but recovered well in the tiebreak to finish the match in straight sets.

This is Cirstea's second French Open quarterfinal and her first in 17 years. Her previous appearance came in 2009, when she lost to Samantha Stosur in straight sets.

This time last year, the Romanian was ranked outside the Top 150. Her resurgence began during the second half of 2025 with a title in Cleveland, a fourth-round run in Cincinnati and several other deep runs that helped her finish the season back inside the Top 50.

After announcing that 2026 would be her final season, Cirstea has continued that momentum with one of the best stretches of her career. She won the title in Cluj-Napoca, reached the semifinals in Rome and Rouen, made the fourth round at Indian Wells and climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 18 last week.

She owns a 6-4 record in quarterfinals since the start of last season. On clay, her quarterfinal record stands at 12-10, including victories in five of her last six. At Grand Slam level, however, she has yet to win a quarterfinal, losing both of her previous appearances, most recently against Karolina Muchova at the US Open in 2023.

Verdict

Sorana Cirstea has rediscovered her best form and has been steadily building momentum over the past year. Mirra Andreeva, however, has been one of the standout performers on clay this season and continues to establish herself among the elite. While this should be a competitive matchup, Andreeva’s stronger body of work on clay gives her the advantage. A deciding set would not be a surprise.
