Jessica Pegula enters the French Open in outstanding form, riding a streak of consistent results including multiple titles this year. In contrast, Kimberly Birrell has struggled, especially on clay, arriving at Roland Garros on a five-match losing streak and without a main draw Grand Slam win since early 2023. Given Birrell’s poor clay record and Pegula’s dominance over lower-ranked opponents, Pegula is the solid favorite. The recommendation is clear: Pegula’s momentum and consistency should see her advance comfortably.

Birrell Chasing Rare Grand Slam Success

Kimberly Birrell has struggled badly since the start of the clay season and currently arrives on a five-match losing streak. She has not won a match since reaching the semifinals of the WTA 125 event in Austin in early March.

The Australian started the year ranked outside the top 100 but quickly climbed the rankings with semifinal runs in Adelaide and Austin along with notable wins in Indian Wells and Dubai. Those results moved her close to matching her career-best ranking of No. 60 before her momentum faded on clay.

Birrell owns a 2-11 career record in Grand Slam opening-round matches and is currently on a nine-match losing streak at this level. She has not won a Grand Slam main-draw match since the Australian Open in 2023, including an 0-2 record on clay.

Pegula Continues Remarkable Consistency

Jessica Pegula has continued her strong form from last season into 2026. Most recently, she reached the quarterfinals in Rome before losing to Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

The American has played eight tournaments this year and reached at least the quarterfinal stage in seven of them. Her standout results include titles in Dubai and Charleston along with a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open.

Pegula experienced a difficult stretch during this part of the season last year, failing to record multiple wins between Stuttgart and Cincinnati apart from a couple of stronger performances at the French Open and Bad Homburg. She will hope for a more consistent run this season.

The 32-year-old struggled early in her Roland Garros career, failing either in qualifying or the opening round in her first five appearances between 2013 and 2020. However, she has reached at least the third round in each of her last four visits to French Open.

Verdict

Kimberly Birrell’s struggles on clay are well known, as it remains her weakest surface by far. She has not registered a tour-level win on clay since 2023, which makes Jessica Pegula the overwhelming favorite in this clash.
