Ostapenko Looks To Carry Wuhan Momentum Into Ningbo

Jelena Ostapenko is coming off an impressive week in Wuhan, where she reached the semifinals before losing to Sonay Kartal in a disappointing finish. She led 4-1 in both sets but lost each in a tiebreak. The Latvian will now look to carry her recent momentum into Ningbo.

Before Wuhan, Ostapenko struggled to find momentum and confidence, winning only two matches across her previous five events. Overall, she has recorded five quarterfinal-or-better finishes on tour this season, alongside multiple third-round appearances at high-profile tournaments.

She has played 21 events across all surfaces this year and won her opening-round match in 14 of them. Making her Ningbo debut this week, she will aim to improve that record and build on her recent semifinal run.

Bencic Seeks A Turnaround Amid Fitness Concerns

Belinda Bencic suffered a hip injury in Toronto a few months ago and withdrew from her quarterfinal match. Since then, she has struggled to reproduce her usual level, playing four more events in the following weeks but winning only one match.

Despite her recent setbacks, Bencic has enjoyed a solid season overall. She did not suffer an opening-round defeat until Cincinnati. Her notable results include quarterfinal appearances in Toronto and Miami, as well as fourth-round runs at the French Open, Wimbledon, Madrid and Indian Wells.

Last year, Bencic played five events during the Asian swing and won at least two matches in each of them. However, her recent fitness concerns have contributed to early exits in Wuhan and Beijing, and she will be looking to turn things around in Ningbo.

Verdict

Despite the physical demands of her Wuhan campaign, Ostapenko has a chance to carry her improved form into Ningbo. Bencic’s recent fitness issues and inconsistent results could work in the Latvian’s favour if she maintains her current level.
