Lyon returns to the ATP calendar in 2026 with a major makeover, moving from clay to indoor hard courts at the LDLC Arena from October 19–25, replacing Marseille. Top seed Flavio Cobolli, with Taylor Fritz, Valentin Vacherot, and Tommy Paul, lead a competitive field, alongside French stars Humbert and Moutet and former champion Norrie. With €115,195 and 250 ranking points for the winner, no clear favorite emerges, but Fritz, Paul, Nakashima, and Humbert present strong cases for the title in a wide-open ATP 250 draw.

Lyon returns to the ATP calendar this week with a whole new look. After eight years as a clay-court warm-up for Roland Garros, the 2026 Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes moves indoors to the LDLC Arena from October 19 to 25, taking over the slot left by the Marseille event.

Flavio Cobolli leads the field as the top seed, ahead of Taylor Fritz, who has taken a wildcard, Valentin Vacherot and Tommy Paul. Lorenzo Musetti and Brandon Nakashima add further depth to a strong ATP 250 draw.

There’s plenty of French interest too. Ugo Humbert, who won the last two Marseille titles, opens against compatriot Corentin Moutet, and former Lyon champion Cameron Norrie also returns. Stan Wawrinka, in the final season of his career, faces Martin Landaluce for a likely shot at Cobolli in the second round.

Tournament Overview

Lyon first joined the ATP Tour in 2017 as a clay-court event in the week before Roland Garros, and its champions include Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Arthur Fils. After a year off the calendar in 2025, it returns in a new October slot on indoor hard courts, replacing the Marseille tournament, which had been held since 1993.

The 2026 edition is the eighth in Lyon, and the first on hard courts. Play takes place at the LDLC Arena, which opened in December 2023, and the 28-player draw gives byes to the top four seeds.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

The first champion of Lyon’s new indoor era will collect €115,195 and 250 ATP ranking points. The runner-up earns €67,200 and 165 points, while losing semi-finalists take home €39,505 each.

For top seed Flavio Cobolli, the points are just as valuable as the money. The ATP lists him among the contenders for the ATP Finals, so a deep run in Lyon could strengthen his case for Turin with only a few weeks of the season left.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

There’s no form guide for this surface yet, because the LDLC Arena is hosting ATP tennis for the first time. Indoor hard courts in France have traditionally played quick, though. Marseille, the event Lyon replaces, consistently rewarded big servers and aggressive baseliners, and Ugo Humbert’s two titles there show how much a left-handed first-strike game can thrive in these conditions.

For bettors, the unknown court speed is an angle in itself. Players who adapt fastest in the early rounds often have the edge, and seeds coming off byes start the week with no matches played on the new surface.

Recent Champions

Lyon’s clay-court years produced a strong list of winners, from Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas to Arthur Fils, who took the 2023 title as a teenager. Cameron Norrie is the only past Lyon champion in this year’s draw. The Briton won in 2022, a year after losing the final to Tsitsipas.

Recent indoor form points elsewhere, though. Ugo Humbert won the last two Marseille titles, the event Lyon replaces, beating Hamad Medjedovic 7-6(4), 6-4 in last year’s final. Medjedovic is also in Lyon and opens against fifth seed Brandon Nakashima.

Top 8 Seeds

Italy and the United States dominate the seedings. Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Musetti fly the Italian flag, while Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Brandon Nakashima give the Americans three seeded players. Valentin Vacherot, who won last year’s Shanghai title, is seeded third. Ugo Humbert is the only Frenchman among the seeds, and Britain’s Arthur Fery rounds out the list.

Players to Watch

Taylor Fritz
Fritz is 13th in the Race to Turin and needs a big week to keep his ATP Finals hopes alive. He has won just one match in each of his last two tournaments, so the second seed is short on rhythm, but his serve could do serious damage indoors if it clicks.

Tommy Paul
Paul is arguably the in-form American. He reached the quarter-finals in Shanghai and sits 12th in the Race, 295 points behind Alex de Minaur in 10th. That’s a gap a title in Lyon would help close. His first match will be against Bonzi or Norrie.

Brandon Nakashima
The fifth seed has one of the toughest openers in the draw against Hamad Medjedovic, who reached last year’s Marseille final. Nakashima’s clean, consistent baseline game travels well to indoor courts, and if he gets through, his section opens up nicely.

Ugo Humbert
No one in the draw has a better recent record in French indoor tennis than Humbert, who won the last two Marseille titles. The seventh seed faces a tricky all-French opener against Corentin Moutet, but he’s a live outsider if he gets through.

Verdict

There’s no clear favourite in Lyon, and we think four players have a strong chance. Tommy Paul arrives off a Shanghai quarter-final, Taylor Fritz has the serve to dominate indoors, Brandon Nakashima leads the top-half challenge, and two-time Marseille champion Ugo Humbert knows how to win in French indoor conditions.
