Chwalinska Rises Into The Top 15 After Stunning Wuhan Run
Maja Chwalinska defeated a physically struggling Iga Swiatek in straight sets to book her place in the Wuhan final, winning 7-5, 6-1. After trailing 3-5 in the opening set, she won 10 of the next 11 games to take control and dominate the match.
This was Chwalinska’s fourth consecutive upset of the week, following impressive victories over opponents including Iva Jovic and Maria Sakkari. Her run has now taken her into her maiden WTA 1000 final.
The 24-year-old struggled to build momentum after reaching the French Open final, losing five of her six matches between Wimbledon and the US Open. However, she has found her rhythm since the start of the Asian swing, including a semifinal appearance in Singapore.

Kartal Targets Second Career Title After Stunning Ostapenko
Sonay Kartal defeated Jelena Ostapenko in two tight sets to reach the Wuhan final, winning 7-6, 7-6. She trailed 1-4 in both sets before mounting comebacks to secure the victory.
With this win, Kartal became the second British player to reach a WTA 1000 final, after Johanna Konta, since the format was introduced in 2009.
The 24-year-old recently returned from an injury that sidelined her for more than six months and saw her fall out of the top 150. However, she has now won seven of her last eight matches, a run that has helped her return to the top 50 in the rankings.
This is Kartal’s second tour-level final. She previously reached the final in Monastir in 2024, where she defeated Rebecca Sramkova in straight sets to claim the title. She will now aim to repeat that success and secure another trophy in Wuhan.
