Maria Sakkari has shown remarkable resilience in her recent tennis matches, particularly after her dramatic come-from-behind victory against world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in Doha. This win boosts her spirits as she heads into her next challenge against Karolina Muchova. Muchova, on the other hand, remains solid with consistent performances, having not lost to a non-top-10 player this year. With a head-to-head lead of 4-1 over Sakkari, Muchova is looking to capitalize on her form to make it to her first final since 2024.

Sakkari Stuns Swiatek in Doha Comeback Classic

Maria Sakkari stunned world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a dramatic quarterfinal comeback in Doha. She was one point away from seeing Swiatek serve for the match in straight sets before turning it around.

It marked her second top-10 win of the week after defeating Jasmine Paolini earlier in the tournament. It is the first time since the 2022 WTA Finals that she has beaten two top-10 players at a single event.

The result is a major boost for Sakkari, who has struggled for form and consistency over the past two seasons. She now eyes her first Doha final after falling in the semifinals here in 2023 and 2024.

This is her first tour-level semifinal since Charleston in 2024. She carries a 10-24 career record in semifinals at this level, having lost eight of her last eleven.

Muchova Edges Closer to First Final Since 2024

Karolina Muchova advanced to the Doha semifinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Anna Kalinskaya. Despite being broken twice, she remained the more composed and controlled player throughout the match.

Her route to the last four has been relatively smooth. She defeated Jaqueline Cristian and Tereza Valentova in straight sets, while compatriot Karolina Pliskova retired in the third round while trailing.

Muchova has battled fitness issues in recent years, which have limited her consistency. However, she appears in better physical condition this season, highlighted by a semifinal run in Brisbane and a fourth-round showing at the Australian Open.

The Czech owns a 6-10 career record in tour-level semifinals and has not reached a final since Beijing in 2024.

Verdict

Sakkari is playing some of her best tennis in recent months, and wins over Paolini and Swiatek underline her resilience and growing confidence. Still, Karolina Muchova’s superior consistency and form make her the favorite in this clash, even if Maria Sakkari refuses to fold easily.
