Andreeva Begins Title Defense in Style

Mirra Andreeva began her Indian Wells title defense with a dominant 6-0 6-0 win over Solana Sierra. It was the first double bagel of her career at tour level.

The Russian is coming off a disappointing quarterfinal loss in Dubai, where she fell to Amanda Anisimova after leading by a set despite having chances to close the match.

Still, Andreeva has made a strong start to the season compared to her injury-hit finish last year, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open, winning the title in Adelaide and making the quarterfinal in Brisbane.

However, since the grass season last year she has played five WTA 1000 events and managed multiple wins only once, in Beijing.

Siniakova Shows Comeback Spirit

Katerina Siniakova produced back-to-back comeback wins over Sofia Kenin and Leylah Fernandez to reach the third round in Indian Wells. She was a break down and saved multiple break points against Fernandez.

This is the first time she has recorded consecutive main-draw wins this season. Before this week she had played four tournaments and won only three matches.

Siniakova has played two previous third-round matches in Indian Wells and lost both in straight sets, against Caroline Wozniacki in 2017 and Karolina Muchova last year.

Verdict

Mirra Andreeva’s strong first-round performance highlighted her intent and motivation to go deep in the event. Katerina Siniakova showed resilience, but she is still struggling to reach the level she had last year. Considering the current form, Andreeva is likely to win in straight sets, with under 20.5 games a possible outcome.
