Nick Kyrgios returns to grass-court action at the Stuttgart Open after lengthy injury spells, aiming to rediscover his form. He faces Corentin Moutet, who also seeks to reverse his five-match losing streak after fitness setbacks. Both are searching for momentum, but Kyrgios’s historic strength on grass and Moutet’s current inconsistency tip the odds towards the Australian. The article suggests value on backing Kyrgios to win both the first set and match, provided he can get close to his grass-court best.

Nick Kyrgios has barely played any tennis in recent years, featuring in just a handful of matches over the last four seasons and only a couple this year. However, grass remains a completely different story for him. Regardless of his lack of match practice or fitness concerns, Kyrgios is always a dangerous proposition on this surface because of the sheer quality of his serve and attacking game.

Kyrgios Eyes Positive Start in Stuttgart

Nick Kyrgios has been battling recurring knee and wrist issues since 2023, preventing him from returning to full fitness and forcing him to spend long periods on the sidelines. As a result, he has played only a handful of matches over the last two seasons.

The Australian played five singles matches last year and, apart from a first-round victory over Mackenzie McDonald in Miami, lost all of his other outings. This season, he has made just one singles appearance, falling to Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets in Brisbane. He also competed in a few doubles events alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis, but those campaigns ended early.

Kyrgios now returns to action in Stuttgart, a tournament where he has enjoyed mixed fortunes. He has made four previous appearances and reached the semifinals in 2018 and 2022, while his other two campaigns ended in the opening round. He will be hoping history repeats itself with another deep run this week.

Moutet Hoping Grass Brings Another Revival

Corentin Moutet has also been hampered by fitness issues this season. He suffered a leg injury during the Australian Open and has struggled to regain his rhythm since then, resulting in several early exits. He arrives in Stuttgart on a five-match losing streak.

The Frenchman experienced similar problems during the first half of last year, but his fortunes changed once the grass-court season began. A series of strong results helped him climb close to the Top 30 in the rankings, and he will be hoping for a similar resurgence over the coming weeks.

This will be Moutet's third appearance in Stuttgart. He lost in the opening round on his debut in 2023 before improving to a second-round finish last year. Another positive run this week could provide a much-needed boost to his season.

Verdict

At underdog odds, it is difficult to ignore Kyrgios in these conditions, especially against an inconsistent opponent. Backing Kyrgios to win the first set and Kyrgios to win the match both offer plenty of value if he can produce anything close to his grass-court best.
