Bartunkova Closes in on Her Maiden Tour-Level Final

Nikola Bartunkova defeated fellow Czech Darja Vidmanova in three sets to reach the semifinals in Monterrey, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. She saved nine of the 11 break points she faced and converted four of the 12 she created during the match.

This is her first tour-level semifinal of the year after losing in the quarterfinals in Ostrava and Berlin. She will now be looking to go even further this week.

The 20-year-old has produced impressive results at this level this year, including reaching the fourth round in Rome and the third round at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and Toronto. With this run, she is now close to making her Top 30 debut in the rankings.

She has played one tour-level semifinal previously in her career, which came in Guadalajara in 2025, where she lost to Iva Jovic in straight sets. With her improved form and level this year, she will be looking to reach her maiden tour-level final this week.

Elise Mertens Brings a Strong Semifinal Record

Elise Mertens ended Yuliia Starodubtseva's resurgence by defeating her in straight sets to reach the semifinals, 6-1, 6-4. She fired seven aces and did not face a single break point during the match.

This is her second semifinal appearance in Monterrey. She previously reached this stage during her debut in 2023 but lost to Caroline Garcia in straight sets. She will be looking to go one step further this week.

The Belgian will be relieved with her results this week. Before arriving in Monterrey, she had registered multiple main-draw wins at only four tour-level events this year, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and Rome, the third round in Dubai and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
