Oksana Selekhmeteva is poised for a breakthrough, reaching the quarterfinals in Mérida and targeting her first tour-level semifinal. Her consistent form sees her holding a strong record in recent quarterfinals, positioning her as a serious contender against Payton Stearns. Meanwhile, Stearns has showcased her experience and recent form improvement, particularly in Austin, where she delivered her season's strongest performance. Although Stearns holds an edge based on experience, Selekhmeteva’s determination and recent successes make her a significant threat in this matchup.

Selekhmeteva Eyes Maiden Tour-Level Semifinal

Oksana Selekhmeteva reached the quarterfinals in Mérida after defeating Alycia Parks in three sets and Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets. She now targets her maiden tour-level semifinal.

Last season, she recorded six semifinal-or-better finishes at WTA 125 events, earning a top-100 debut.

In 2026, she shifted focus fully to tour-level events, reaching the third round at the Australian Open and now making another deep run in Mérida.

Selekhmeteva has played two previous tour-level quarterfinals, both in Prague in 2022 and 2024, but has yet to progress beyond that stage.

Resurgent Stearns Eyes Deep Austin Run

Peyton Stearns cruised past Kaja Juvan 6-2, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals in Austin. She won 83 percent of her first-serve points and saved both break points she faced.

It marks her most convincing performance of the season, especially after struggling in a three-set opener against Francesca Jones.

This is only the second time in the last nine months she has won multiple main-draw matches, the other being her third-round run at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Stearns now reaches her first hard-court quarterfinal since Cleveland 2024 and her second quarterfinal overall in the past year, following her semifinal in Rome.

Verdict

Peyton Stearns has shown improved form this week and brings greater experience to the matchup. However, Oksana Selekhmeteva is chasing a breakthrough and will be fully committed, which gives her value in this clash despite Stearns’ edge in experience.
