Qinwen Zheng, recovering from an injury-hit season, has impressed with back-to-back victories but faces fitness concerns against the in-form Kazakh. Despite Zheng's resilience and recent success, Rybakina's current streak and head-to-head advantage make her the favorite in their upcoming clash. Zheng’s Recovery Paying Off

Qinwen Zheng battled past Alycia Parks in a tight three-set match to reach the third round in Doha, winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-2. Earlier this week, she also showed resilience by coming from a set down to defeat Sofia Kenin in the opener.

The Chinese star had ended her 2025 season early after the grass swing and played only one event in China, which ended in retirement. She then skipped the entire Australian swing to focus on recovery.

That decision appears to be paying off, as she has returned this week with back-to-back wins and is building match rhythm quickly. This is also the first time she has won multiple main-draw matches in Doha across her three appearances.

Despite an injury-hit season last year, Zheng remained consistent at the top level, reaching six quarterfinals or better. Four of those runs came at WTA 1000 or higher events, though none had previously been in the Middle East.

Rybakina’s Winning Run Rolls On

Elena Rybakina extended her winning streak by reaching the third round in Doha with a straight-sets win over Xinyu Wang, 6-2, 6-4. It was another controlled performance from the Kazakh.

This victory stretches her run to eight straight wins following her title triumph at the Australian Open, underlining her strong start to the season.

Rybakina struggled for consistency in the first half of 2025, which briefly pushed her outside the top 10. However, her form steadily improved from the North American hardcourt swing, peaking with title wins in Ningbo and the WTA Finals.

She also has a solid record in the Middle East, having reached at least the quarterfinals in all three events she played here last year. With confidence high, she will be aiming for another deep run in Doha.

Verdict

Zheng’s record in recent round-of-16 matches is impressive, but her return from injury has come with questions around fitness and confidence. Against an in-form Elena Rybakina, those doubts are likely to show, leaving the Kazakh well placed to win with little pressure.
