Ben Shelton has won four titles this year, getting it done on all three surfaces. He lifted trophies in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart, two of those final victories coming against Taylor Fritz.
The American suffered a shock first round defeat to Otto Virtanen at Wimbledon and lost to Alejandro Tabilo in the Washington quarter-finals.
Shelton was sensational in Montreal where he won the title without dropping a set, his serve broken just three times in six matches. He went out in his opening match in Cincinnati, beaten 6-4 6-4 by Jaime Faria.
The World No.9 had a terrible start at the US Open but rallied to beat Tallon Griekspoor 1-6 6-1 7-6 6-2., ending with 40 winners and 26 unforced errors.
He spoke about the victory in the on-court interview. "I started off with a little bit of nerves tonight. I found my rhythm at some point through the second set."
"Obviously a lot of credit to Tallon, he’s a difficult player to player to play. He doesn’t give you a lot of rhythm. He has an attacking game style and I found things really difficult for the first set tonight."
Hurkacz a Long Way From His Best
Hubert Hurkacz lost seven straight matches this year and dropped out of the Top 100 in June.
The Pole bounced back at Wimbledon, beating Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul before a fourth round defeat to Jan Lennard Struff.
A return to hard courts failed to reap any rewards however, going out early in Montreal and Cincinnati. He then won the Cancun Challenger, beating Sebastian Baez in the final.
Hurkacz came through to beat Damir Dzumhur 6-4 4-6 6-1 6-1 at the US Open, winning 49% of his 2nd serves and saving 8/12 break points.
