Karolina Pliskova, a former World No. 1, aims to leverage her grass-court experience and recent comeback momentum against rising star Victoria Mboko at Queen's Club. While Mboko has surged to a Top 10 ranking with deep runs at several tour-level events in 2024, she remains relatively untested on grass. This is their first career meeting, with Pliskova’s big-stage experience making her the slight favorite, though Mboko’s strong season suggests a tightly contested match. The key recommendation: expect experience to play a crucial role.

Pliskova may not have been at her sharpest in her opening match, but her experience and recent improvement should help her handle the challenge of Mboko, whose grass-court experience remains limited.

Mboko Carries Momentum Into Grass Season

Victoria Mboko concluded her clay-court season on a positive note, reaching the final in Strasbourg before falling to Emma Navarro. She backed that up with a third-round appearance at Roland Garros, continuing her strong run of results.

The Canadian has enjoyed an impressive season overall, reaching the finals in Adelaide and Doha, the quarterfinals at Indian Wells and Auckland, and the fourth round of the Australian Open. Those performances helped her break into the Top 10 for the first time a few months ago.

This is only Mboko's second season on grass. She has played just one professional event on the surface, receiving a lucky loser spot at Wimbledon last year and advancing to the second round. She will be hoping to build on that promising start this week.

Pliskova Continues Comeback With Gritty Win

Karolina Pliskova moved into the second round in London after defeating McCartney Kessler 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. She led 4-1 in the opening set but was unable to convert the advantage and eventually lost it before winning the next two sets to seal the match.

The Czech returned to the tour this season after a lengthy injury layoff and found it difficult to build momentum early on. Further physical setbacks also interrupted her progress, but apart from her recent qualifying defeat at Roland Garros, she has produced several solid results.

Pliskova has played six tour-level main draws this year and won at least two matches in five of them. Her best results include quarterfinal runs in Madrid and Linz, along with a fourth-round appearance in Rome. She will be hoping to carry that form further this week.

Verdict

Karolina Pliskova looked a bit shaky on serve in her opening match this week, but her experience and strong resurgence in recent months still give her the edge. Victoria Mboko has shown plenty of promise, yet her limited grass-court experience could prove a disadvantage in this matchup.
