Betting attention has already turned to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, set for Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Spain leads the odds as outright favorite after winning in 2026, with France, Portugal, and England closely following. Each top nation faces transitional challenges, from managerial changes to aging star players. While Spain’s talented young core is praised, history shows no team has gone back-to-back since Brazil (1958-62), making all predictions uncertain. France, under expected new coach Zidane, and Portugal, led by Jorge Jesus, are considered strong contenders.

The dust has only just settled on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but bettors are already looking ahead to the 2030 edition which will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Bookmakers have installed Spain as favourites after their dominant display culminated in the 2026 title. It was their second title after claiming the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The nations that are positioned to peak in 2030 are likely to include the usual suspects. In the 23 World Cups contested since 1930, only eight countries have won the tournament.

Let's take a look at the betting market and anaylise the top contenders.

Spain

Spain enter the 2030 World Cup cycle backed by one of the most envied player-development pipelines in modern football. Under head coach Luis de la Fuente, La Roja transitioned from passive possession toward a high-tempo and direct attacking style built around dynamic wing play and midfield control.

De la Fuente managed every age group prior to the senior side which ensures tactical continuity across senior rosters. His deep knowledge of Spain’s youth system gave him an advantage that other nations failed to utilise.

By 2030, Spain's golden young core will be in their absolute prime. Pau Cubarsi, Pedri and Gavi are expected to dominate the middle of the pitch with Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal providing the threat out wide.

Spain will have to break a long streak of teams unable to go back to back however, no team winning consecutive titles since Brazil in 1958 and 1960.

France

France were the favourites to win the 2026 World Cup but were comprehensively outplayed by Spain in the semi-finals. Kylian Mbappé top scored at the tournament with 10 goals, but he and his side were unable to score against La Roja.

Les Bleus will now evolve into their next chapter without long-serving manager Didier Deschamps who stepped aside. Zinedine Zidane is expected to be his successor, and with a huge talent pool to call upon, expect France to be in the mix to win in 2030.
A world-class midfield featuring Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Manu Koné will all be in their prime with Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué in line to support Mbappé up front.

Portugal

Portugal are yet to win the World Cup and disappointed in 2026 despite having one of the best squads in international football. Roberto Martínez's side conceded a late goal in a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16.

Jorge Jesus was quickly installed as the new manager, the experienced tactician set to lead a squad spearheaded by world-class midfielders including Vitinha and João Neves. With Cristiano Ronaldo not expected to feature in 2030, Gonçalo Ramos is likely to lead the line.

It will be interesting to see how Portugal perform without a superstar to carry their offensive workload. Jesus has already discussed the need to focus on defending, saying: "The first quality of a team is knowing how to defend well, not knowing how to attack."

"France against Spain: Why did Spain win? Because they knew how to defend better. They knew how to stop the quality of the French players."

"That's the first principle, and I emphasize this a lot to my players when I'm with my teams. To win titles, we have to know how to defend well. If we don't defend well, we'll win games, but we'll never win titles."

England

England went desperately close to reaching the 2026 World Cup final, leading Argentina 1-0 in the semi-finals before capitulating in a 2-1 defeat.

Thomas Tuchel was unable to get the Three Lions out of a worrying pattern in international tournaments. His substitutions in the semi-final were heavily criticised and it remains to be seen if he can turn around the mindset of a squad that regularly bucked under pressure.

The 2030 tournament aligns perfectly with the age windows of England's midfield engine where Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson and Jude Bellingham should continue to operate. It remains to be seen if Harry Kane will be able to maintain his form in four years time when the striker will turn 37-years-old.

Brazil

Brazil have won the most World Cup titles but have now gone six editions without success, their last victory coming in 2002. Carlo Ancelotti was unable to improve their fortunes in 2026, going out to Norway in the Round of 16.

Ancelotti will now look ahead to 2030 and attempt to harness a terrifying frontline featuring Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, Endrick, Estêvão, Rayan and Vitor Roque.

Germany

Germany’s renaissance failed to materialise under Julian Nagelsmann, his side knocked out of the 2026 World Cup by Paraguay. It was a huge shock with Paraguay ranked 41st and Germany ranked 10th, Nagelsmann stepping down shortly afterwards.

With Jürgen Klopp expected to reach an agreement to become the next Germany manager, Die Mannschaft are well placed to utilise a high pressing style and give the 2030 edition a shake.
Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz will both be 27-years-old by the time the tournament comes around, two of the most gifted creators in world football who can unlock any defence.

If Germany's defensive transition holds up, they represents a long-shot outright option with massive upside.

Argentina

The weight of being defending champions was too much for Argentina to overcome in 2026, reaching the final where they produced a shocking performance against Spain.

Lionel Scaloni's side took it to extra time, but they were completely outplayed and had no excuses after losing 1-0 in New Jersey.

The post-Lionel Messi era will be fully underway by 2030 with Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez likely to lead the line.

Italy

Italy failed to qualify for a third World Cup in a row, an incredible failure for a nation that have won four World Cups.

Without a manager since Gennaro Gattuso's resignation, Pep Guardiola has reportedly held talks about becoming the next head coach.

It would be a sensational appointment, Guardiola one of the best in the business and more than capable of turning Italy's fortunes around.

Verdict

Many teams are facing a four year transition with star players getting on in age or retiring. There is a long way to go before the 2030 World Cup, but recent history suggests some likely contenders.

With no team going back to back since Brazil in 1958-1962, I am going to avoid Spain and focus on France under Zinedine Zidane. Zidane proved he is an elite manager while at Real Madrid, and he has been waiting patiently to succeed Didier Deschamps.

Brazil and Germany have won nine World Cups between them and could bounce back. With Carlo Ancelotti and Jürgen Klopp at the helm, they could go deep at the tournament and give it shake.
