Bulgaria experienced a disappointing start in the first round with a 2-1 home loss to Luxembourg, marking a significant setback and prompting the departure of coach Dimitrov. The defeat puts pressure on the Bulgarian squad to quickly regroup and perform better in their next game. The key recommendation is for Bulgaria to leverage their home advantage on Tuesday and target the full three points to get back on track in the competition.

Bulgaria have been a mess in the UNL 2026 and recently lost their coach. I am backing Luxembourg to win here and keep their promotion hopes alive.

Key Stats

  • Luxembourg have won 2 of their last 4 matches.
  • Bulgaria have lost 2 of their last 3 matches.

Visitors Dominate H2H

Bulgaria have won 14 out of 18 head to head clashes against Luxembourg, while losing just once.

Luxembourg Trying to Rejoin the Promotion Race

Luxembourg started the new UEFA Nations League in best way possible, beating Bulgaria 2-1 in Plovdiv even though they conceded early here.

Jeff Strasser’s side stood no chance in the follow up clash against Iceland, suffering a convincing 3-0 defeat in front of the home crowd, registering just one shot on target.

Defending in the early stages was problematic on Saturday as well, conceding an early goal against Estonia in Tallinn and lost the encounter 1-0, ending this clash with 0.55-1.61 xG and 8-14 shots.

Bulgaria Going Through Rough Period

Bulgaria secured just one point in three UNL 2026 rounds and their chances to battle for promotion have been reduced to minimum.

After losing the opening clash to Luxembourg 2-1 and a goalless draw against Estonia in follow up match, national coach Aleksandar Dimitrov resigned from his position and Atanas Ribarski currently serves as caretaker.

Nothing changed for Bulgaria in the third round though, losing convincingly to Iceland 3-0 in Reykjavik last weekend (had 1.16-3.05 expected goals and 3-6 shots on target).

Team News & Predicted Lineups

Luxembourg (4-2-3-1) Anthony Moris; Marvin Martins, Enes Mahmutovic, Dirk Carlson, Florian Bohnert; Tomas Moreira, Leandro Barreiro; Vincent Thill, Timothe Rupil, Aiman Dardari; Hamza Kadamani

Luxembourg have to play without captain Laurent Jans and playmaker Danel Sinani. Furthermore, central defender Seid Korac remains out alongside Christopher Martins and Tim Hall.

Bulgaria (4-2-3-1) Daniel Naumov; Ivan Turitsov, Kristian Dimitrov, Teodor Ivanov, Dimitar Velkovski; Emil Tsenov, Ilia Gruev, Asen Chandarov; Georgi Rusev, Zdravko Dimitrov, Lukas Petkov

The visiting side have no reported injuries or suspensions ahead of this clash.

Verdict

Bulgaria lost to Luxembourg 2-1 as hosts in the first round and lost their coach Dimitrov. I am backing the home side to secure three points on Tuesday.
