St Pauli vs Koln Predictions & Tips – Billy Goats Underestimated in Bundesliga

St Pauli is facing a challenging phase with minimal points from recent games and a crushing 5-0 loss to Bayern Munich. Their offensive struggles are evident, scoring only 25 goals in 29 games. On the other hand, Koln sees an optimistic turnaround with their recent performances under caretaker manager Rene Wagner, breaking a winless streak and showcasing improved creativity and effectiveness in attack. As these teams clash again, Koln has a history of dominating head-to-head encounters, making them favorites for the upcoming match.

St Pauli have struggled throughout entire March and lost to Bayern Munich 5-0 at home last weekend. Koln’s form and results improved a lot under caretaker manager Wagner, so I don’t think they are losing this important clash on Friday.

Key Stats

  • St Pauli have lost 3 of their last 4 matches.
  • Koln have won 5 of their last 6 matches against St Pauli.

Billy Goats Dominate Head-to-Head

These two sides locked horns 32 times so far and Koln are ahead 21-4 in terms of victories, 7 matches ending without a winner.

St Pauling Sinking into Red Zone

St Pauli grabbed just two points from their last five appearances in Bundesliga and once again slipped to 16th (playout) place, efficiency labelled as their number one problem (scored 25 goals in 29 games).

They started this month with a lucky 1-1 road draw against Union Berlin, finishing this match with 0.33-2.00 expected goals and 2-8 shots on target, goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj saving the day.

Vasilj had a couple of great saves last weekend too but couldn’t save St Pauli from a humiliating 5-0 home loss against Bayern Munich where they had just 23% possession.

Koln Looking Much Better Under New Manager

A 3-3 home draw against Monchengladbach in mid-March extended Koln’s winless streak to seven games in a row, so they decided to sack manager Lukas Kwasnion, Rene Wagner serving as caretaker at the moment.

The Billy Goats pulled big comeback in Wagner’s debut against favored Frankfurt, scoring two late goals to secure a 2-2 road draw in early April which was more than deserved (posted 3.23 xG and fired 9 shots on target).

Last weekend, they finally put an end to mentioned winless streak with a 3-1 home win over Werder Bremen, once again being quite creative and dangerous with 3.48 xG.

Team News & Predicted Lineups

St Pauli (3-4-2-1) Nikola Vasilj; Hauke Wahl, Tomoya Ando, Karol Mets; Manolis Saliakas, Jackson Irvine, Mathias Rasmussen, Louis Oppie; Danel Sinani, Mathias Pereira Lage; Andreas Hountondji

James Sands is out with an ankle injury, joining Eric Smith and Ricky-Jade Jones on the sidelines. Joel Fujita is serving a one-game suspension.

Koln (3-5-2) Marvin Schwabe; Sebastian Sebulonsen, Jadel Simpson-Pusey, Cenk Ozakacar; Kristoffer Lund, Jan Thielmann, Eric Martel, Isak Bergmann Johannesson, Jakub Kaminski; Ragnar Ache, Said El Mala

Tibo Hubers continues his recovery from a knee injury, while Luca Kilian faces similar problems but he is expected to be back in two weeks.

Verdict

Koln posted around 7.00 xG combined in their two games under caretaker manager Rene Wagner, so I don’t view them as underdogs against struggling St Pauli. An away win draw no bet is the best option here.
