Daniil Medvedev returns to Kazakhstan with a title to defend and a place at the ATP Finals in Turin still to secure. The Russian arrives at the 2026 Almaty Open in strong form, after back-to-back semi-final runs in Beijing and Shanghai.

The ATP 250 event runs from October 19 to 25 on indoor hard courts at the Almaty Arena, and Medvedev heads a seeded field that includes Luciano Darderi, Alexander Bublik and Andrey Rublev.

Almaty has plenty of history in this draw. Karen Khachanov won the first Almaty edition in 2024, and 2023 champion Adrian Mannarino, who won when the event was still held in Astana, is also back. Bublik carries home hopes as the top-ranked Kazakh, while wildcards Mikhail Kukushkin, Zangar Nurlanuly and Timofey Skatov give local fans more to cheer.

The draw could set up a heavyweight semi-final in the top half, with Medvedev, Bublik and Khachanov all in the same section.

Tournament Overview

Kazakhstan’s ATP event began in 2020, when it was added to the calendar to make up for tournaments lost to the pandemic. It was held in Astana for its first four editions, including a one-off ATP 500 year in 2022 that Novak Djokovic won, before moving to Almaty in 2024. The 2026 edition is the tournament’s seventh, and its third in Almaty.

It’s the only indoor event we’ve previewed on this swing, and the 28-player draw gives byes to the top four seeds. Medvedev, Darderi, Bublik and Rublev all start in the second round.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

A title in Almaty is worth $163,570 and 250 ATP ranking points, while the beaten finalist takes home $95,400 and 165 points. Semi-finalists earn 100 points each.

Those numbers matter most to Medvedev. He’s sixth in the Race to Turin, and with the season nearly over, a successful title defence would go a long way towards securing his ATP Finals place. First-round losers leave with no ranking points at all, so the four seeds with byes are guaranteed 25 points just for stepping on court.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

Indoor tennis takes wind, sun and weather out of the equation, which usually suits big servers and first-strike players. Almaty also sits at roughly 800 metres above sea level, so the ball travels a little quicker through the air than at most hard-court events.

The past two champions fit that profile. Khachanov won in 2024 with heavy serving and forehand power, and Medvedev took last year’s title with his flat, deep hitting. For bettors, tiebreak and aces markets deserve a look in matches between strong servers.

Recent Champions

No player has won this title twice, and every edition so far has produced a different champion. That could change this week, with three former winners in the draw: Medvedev (2025), Khachanov (2024) and Mannarino (2023), who also reached the 2020 final.

Two past runners-up are back too. Tsitsipas lost to Djokovic in the 2022 ATP 500 final, and James Duckworth was beaten by Kwon Soon-woo in 2021.

Top 8 Seeds

Medvedev is the standout name. At world No. 6, he’s 15 places clear of second seed Darderi. Below him, five players are ranked between 21st and 31st, so the race behind the favourite looks very open.

Players to Watch

Daniil Medvedev
The defending champion is the clear class act in the field. He reached the semi-finals in both Beijing and Shanghai, where Rafael Jodar ended his run, and Turin points give him every reason to push hard again. Fatigue after deep runs in Beijing and Shanghai is the only real concern.

Karen Khachanov
Khachanov won here in 2024, and his 2026 results back up his credentials: a US Open semi-final, a Beijing quarter-final and a Shanghai fourth round. He’s in Medvedev’s half, so a semi-final between the last two Almaty champions is a real possibility.

Alexander Bublik
The home favourite reached the fourth round in Shanghai and will have the Almaty crowd firmly behind him. Bublik’s serve suits indoor conditions, but his unpredictability cuts both ways. He can beat anyone on his day, or lose to anyone.

Luciano Darderi
The second seed has won two ATP titles this season and has a kind-looking section, opening against Kecmanovic or Duckworth. His game is better suited to slower courts, though, so he’s more vulnerable here than his seeding suggests.

Adrian Mannarino
The 2023 champion is a dangerous floater. The left-hander’s flat, low-bouncing ball is awkward on quick indoor courts, and a second-round clash with Rublev is winnable if he gets past Aleksandar Vukic.

Verdict

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev is our pick to win in Almaty, as the class of the field on quick indoor courts. Home favourite Alexander Bublik and 2023 champion Adrian Mannarino are the longshots worth backing.
