The 2026 Ningbo Open, a WTA 500 event held at the Yinzhou Tennis Center from October 19–25, features world No. 1 Elena Rybakina as defending champion and top seed. Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk are contending for a place at the WTA Finals, with crucial ranking points at stake. The tournament is played on medium-paced hard courts, which could favor various playstyles. The article concludes that Swiatek, given her current form and motivation, is the top pick to win, especially with Rybakina managing a foot injury.

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina heads the field at the 2026 Ningbo Open, the WTA 500 event on outdoor hard courts at the Yinzhou Tennis Center that runs from October 19 to 25.

Rybakina returns as defending champion after coming from a set down to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova in last year’s final. She arrives as the top seed, with Iga Swiatek seeded second and Marta Kostyuk third.

The stakes are high late in the season, with Swiatek and Kostyuk both still chasing a place at the WTA Finals. Every win in Ningbo counts towards the race, so neither can afford an early exit.

There is also an intriguing storyline in Kostyuk’s quarter. 2024 champion Daria Kasatkina has a wildcard, now playing under the Australian flag, while last year’s runner-up Alexandrova opens against home wildcard Hanyu Guo.

Tournament Overview

The 2026 Ningbo Open runs from October 19 to 25 on outdoor hard courts at the Yinzhou Tennis Center, with the singles final scheduled for Sunday, October 25. Ningbo was upgraded to WTA 500 status in 2024, and this is the event’s third year at that level.

The singles draw has 28 players, so the top four seeds (Rybakina, Swiatek, Kostyuk and Jovic) receive byes into the second round. That means they need four wins rather than five to lift the trophy.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

The 2026 Ningbo Open champion will collect 500 WTA ranking points and $185,500, while the runner-up earns 325 points and $114,500. Semi-finalists receive 195 points each, and a quarter-final finish is worth 108.

With the season almost over, these points matter for more than prize money. For players like Swiatek and Kostyuk, a deep run in Ningbo could decide whether they qualify for the WTA Finals.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

Ningbo’s outdoor Plexipave hard courts play at a medium pace, so neither big servers nor counterpunchers have a clear edge. Rybakina won here last year with power, and Kasatkina won in 2024 with defence.

For bettors, fatigue is the key factor. Ningbo comes at the end of a long Asian swing, so tired favourites can be vulnerable early.

Recent Champions

Ningbo has produced a different champion every year since its return in 2023. Ons Jabeur won the WTA 250 edition, Kasatkina lifted the first WTA 500 title in 2024, and Rybakina claimed her 10th career title here last year. Two of those champions, Rybakina and Kasatkina, are back in this year’s draw.

Players to Watch

Elena Rybakina
The defending champion arrives as world No. 1 and has already qualified for the WTA Finals. However, an ongoing foot injury cut short her Asian swing and forced her out of Wuhan, so her fitness is a real question. She’s hard to back at short odds until she proves she’s moving freely.

Iga Swiatek
Swiatek reached the Wuhan semi-finals and arrives in good rhythm. She and Kostyuk are chasing the final WTA Finals spot, hoping to close the gap on Karolina Muchova, who sits seventh in the Race and isn’t playing. That motivation makes her the most reliable pick in the bottom half.

Marta Kostyuk
Kostyuk is fighting for the same Finals spot and has the game to hurt Swiatek. She beat the Pole at Roland Garros this year, before Swiatek levelled with a three-set comeback in Toronto. A projected semi-final between them could decide the race.

Iva Jovic
The American teenager is one of the busiest players of the autumn. She defended her Guadalajara title and reached the last 16 in both Beijing and Wuhan. With Rybakina’s fitness in doubt, Jovic offers value in the top half.

Jelena Ostapenko
Ostapenko is the dangerous floater. She upset Pegula and Shnaider on her way to the Wuhan semi-finals, and opens against Bencic, who is 1-4 since withdrawing from Toronto in August. She’s a strong first-round upset pick.

Verdict

Iga Swiatek is our pick to win the Ningbo Open. She has the WTA Finals race to play for and the easier half of the draw, and she beat Rybakina in this year’s Toronto final.

Defending champion Elena Rybakina is the obvious threat, but her foot injury makes her risky at a short price. Iva Jovic offers value in the top half after a busy autumn, while Jelena Ostapenko is the longshot, arriving off a run to the Wuhan semi-finals.
