The 2026 Japan Women’s Open in Osaka features a wide-open draw, as defending champion Leylah Fernandez skips the event to play in Ningbo. Top seed Ann Li is favored, with other contenders including Peyton Stearns, Kimberly Birrell, and Talia Gibson. The Utsubo Tennis Center’s medium-paced outdoor hard courts have historically rewarded varied playing styles and produced surprise winners. With $283,347 in total prize money and 250 WTA points for the champion, Osaka presents a significant opportunity for players ranked outside the top 30.

Osaka is guaranteed a new champion in 2026, with Leylah Fernandez skipping her title defence at the Japan Women’s Open to play in Ningbo. That leaves the WTA 250 event at the Utsubo Tennis Center wide open from October 19 to 25.

American Ann Li is the top seed on the outdoor hard courts, with Peyton Stearns, Kimberly Birrell and Talia Gibson completing the top four. None of them has won a title here before, though Birrell knows the venue well after reaching the 2024 final.

Several familiar faces are in the draw. Last year’s runner-up Tereza Valentova opens against Zhang Shuai, while 2023 champion Ashlyn Krueger meets sixth seed Janice Tjen.

All eyes will be on Sonay Kartal. She lost a draining three-set Wuhan final to Maja Chwalinska on Sunday, and now faces third seed Kimberly Birrell in the first round, one of the toughest turnarounds of the season.

Tournament Overview

The Japan Women’s Open has moved around since its first women-only edition in 2009. It started in Osaka, spent three years in Tokyo and two in Hiroshima, then returned to the Utsubo Tennis Center in 2023. The 2026 event is the 15th edition, and the main stadium court holds 5,000 fans.

Unlike Ningbo, Osaka has a full 32-player singles draw with no byes, so every seed has to win five matches to take the title. Main-draw play begins on Monday, October 19, and the final is on Sunday, October 25.

Ranking Points & Prize Money

The Osaka champion walks away with $37,390 and 250 WTA ranking points. The runner-up earns $22,125 and 163 points, while each losing semi-finalist banks 98.

The rewards are smaller than at Ningbo’s WTA 500 event, but for players ranked outside the top 30, a title run here could mean a significant jump in the rankings before the season ends.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

The Utsubo Tennis Center’s outdoor hard courts have rewarded very different styles. Ashlyn Krueger won with big serving in 2023, while Leylah Fernandez took last year’s title with left-handed variety and counterpunching. The key trend for bettors is how often the outsiders go deep.

The 2024 final was an all-qualifier affair, so players who arrive match-sharp from qualifying deserve real respect against seeds playing their first match.

Recent Champions

Osaka has a habit of crowning first-time winners. Ashlyn Krueger won her maiden WTA title here in 2023, and a year later Suzan Lamens beat Kimberly Birrell in an all-qualifier final, also for her first title. Leylah Fernandez broke that pattern last year, beating Tereza Valentova in three sets for her fifth career title.

Three of the last three years’ finalists, Birrell, Krueger and Valentova, are back in the draw.

Top 8 Seeds

There’s no top-30 player in Osaka this year, which makes it one of the more open draws of the Asian swing. Ann Li, ranked 31st, is the top seed, and the eight seeds are separated by just 23 ranking places. Seeds don’t get byes here, so every one of them faces a tricky opener.

Players to Watch

Sonay Kartal
Kartal arrives as the form player in the draw after beating four top names in Wuhan and reaching her first WTA 1000 final. The question is what’s left in the tank after a long final and a quick flight to Japan. She has the quality to win this event, but she’s a risky bet in round one.

Kimberly Birrell
The 2024 runner-up knows exactly how to win matches at the Utsubo Tennis Center. Drawing a tired Kartal could be a blessing or a trap. If Birrell gets through, the path to the latter stages opens up nicely.

Ann Li
The top seed has a manageable start against qualifier Emerson Jones. Li has the cleanest route of the leading seeds, and her consistency from the baseline makes her the natural favourite in the top half.

Tereza Valentova
Valentova came within a set of the title last year and returns with her confidence intact. She opens against veteran Zhang Shuai and could meet Samsonova in round two. She’s worth considering as an outsider.

Paula Badosa
The former world No. 2 is unseeded and could be dangerous. Her first-round match against Antonia Ruzic is a real test, but if her body holds up, Badosa has more top-level experience than anyone else in the bottom half.

Verdict

Ann Li gets our vote in Osaka. The top seed arrives off a quarter-final run in Wuhan and has the kindest early draw of the leading players.

Sonay Kartal is the biggest threat, with bookmakers making her a strong favourite against Birrell despite a draining Wuhan final, and she’s the one to beat if her legs hold up.

Austin champion Peyton Stearns faces a coin-flip opener against Siniakova but has the game to go deep, while Tereza Valentova is the value pick after reaching last year’s final.
