Alcaraz the New King of Clay
Carlos Alcaraz won 16 straight matches to start the year, winning the Australian Open and Qatar Open. His first defeat came in Indian Wells, a semi-final exit against Daniil Medvedev.
The 22-year-old suffered another surprise defeat in Miami, beaten by Sebastian Korda in the third round.
The World No.1 is aiming for back to back titles in Monte Carlo. He thrashed Sebastian Baez 6-1 6-3, edged past Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-1 4-6 6-3 and hammered Alexander Bublik 6-3 6-0 in 63 minutes.
Alcaraz was too good for Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals, defeating the local hope 6-4 6-4. He gave up just one break point, winning 60% of his 2nd serves.
The Spaniard spoke after the match: “For me, I’m just happy to win this really difficult match against Valentin. He’s playing great tennis with a lot of confidence right now, playing in his hometown.
“It was really tough to get the win, but I’m really excited about my first meeting with Jannik in 2026.”
Sinner in Fantastic Form
Jannik Sinner had a slow start to the year by his high standards. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals before a quarter-final defeat to Jakub Mensik in Doha.
The 24-year-old has won 16 matches since, taking out Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami without dropping a set. He beat Alexander Zverev in both semi-finals, registering final victories over Daniil Medvedev and Jiri Lehecka.
The World No.2 has hardly been troubled in Monte Carlo. He crushed Ugo Humbert 6-3 6-0, defeated Tomas Machac 6-1 6-7 6-3 and cruised past Felix Auger Aliassime 6-3 6-4.
The Italian hardly gave Zverev a chance in the semi-finals, cruising through 6-1 6-4 after winning 75% of his 2nd serves and saving one break point.
Sinner spoke after the victory: “I’m very happy. We came here trying to give myself some feedback (on clay) and now finding myself in the final means a lot to me.
“Obviously every match, every day is different, so I’m very happy about today’s performance. I felt really solid from the beginning. When you are a break up straightaway, it changes the dynamic of the match, so very happy and let’s see what’s coming in the final.”
Verdict
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner meet for the 18th time in what is sure to be a familiar occurrence in men’s tennis.
Sinner hasn’t been far away from Alcaraz on clay, and with the World No.1 spot up for grabs, the Italian can get it done in Monte Carlo.
