Casper Ruud has reached three semi-finals in Rome and his form suggests a fourth is on the cards. I can’t see Karen Khachanov stopping the Norwegian in Rome, a straight sets victory on the cards.

Ruud Relishing the Conditions in Rome

Casper Ruud is still searching for his first semi-final of the year. He went 7-7 on hard courts but has fared much better on clay.

The Norwegian retired against Felix Auger Aliassime in the third round in Monte Carlo. He then got to the quarters in Madrid where he lost 6-4 6-4 to Alexander Blockx.

The 27-year-old enjoys playing in Rome where he hasn’t lost a set. He beat Zachary Svajda 6-1 6-3, Jiri Lehecka 6-3 6-4 and Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-1, saving a combined 3/4 break points.

Khachanov Hanging onto Top 20

Karen Khachanov has been in the Top 20 since Wimbledon but that position is under threat. He is 11-10 this year, reaching one quarter-final which came in Doha.

The Russian lost his opening matches in Monte Carlo and Barcelona before an early exit in Madrid, going down 6-4 7-6 to Jakub Mensik.

The 29-year-old hasn’t faced a Top 50 player in Rome, defeating Alexander Shevchenko 6-4 6-4, Botic van de Zandschulp 5-7 6-4 6-4 and Dino Prizmic 6-1 7-6.

Khachanov has saved 26/30 break points in Italy, a stark contrast to Ruud’s impressive serving performance.

Verdict

Casper Ruud v Karen Khachanov

Casper Ruud has a 21-6 record in Rome and has given up only four break points this year. Karen Khachanov has allowed 30 break points to inferior opponents, so it makes sense to back Ruud to cruise into the semi-finals.
