Mirra Andreeva, riding impressive clay momentum with a 14-2 record and recent WTA 1000-level success, is favored against Elise Mertens in their first career meeting at Rome. While Mertens produced a stunning comeback win to reach this stage, she remains on a five-match losing streak in Round-of-16 matches at this level and has struggled against top players on clay. Fatigue could test Andreeva, but Mertens’ inconsistency positions the 19-year-old Russian as the probable winner, likely in a three-set battle.

Andreeva arrives with excellent clay-court momentum, although the heavy schedule could make this more challenging. Mertens has yet to show the level needed to fully exploit that situation, so Andreeva still looks favored, possibly in a three-set battle.

Rome Momentum Favors Andreeva

  • Elise Mertens is on a five-match losing streak in tour-level Round-of-16 matches.
  • She has a 4–11 career record vs Top 10 players on clay.
  • Mirra Andreeva seeks a second straight Rome quarterfinal.
  • She holds a 25–3 record vs outside Top 20 players this year.

Mertens Produces Stunning Comeback Win

Elise Mertens produced a dramatic comeback win over Jasmine Paolini in Rome, winning 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. She trailed by a set and 2-4 before saving three match points to avoid a straight-sets defeat and turn the match around.

This marks the first time since Dubai earlier this year that Mertens has won back-to-back matches on tour. It is a much-needed run for the Belgian, who has struggled for consistency after a strong start to the season.

The 30-year-old is still searching for her first quarterfinal appearance on tour since Monterrey last year. She currently carries a five-match losing streak in round-of-16 matches.

Mertens has previously played two fourth-round matches in Rome. She defeated Danka Kovinic to reach the quarterfinals in 2020 before losing to Diana Shnaider at the same stage last year.

Andreeva Continues Dominant Clay Run

Mirra Andreeva advanced to the fourth round in Rome after defeating Viktorija Golubic 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. She lost control after dominating the opening set but responded strongly in the decider to close the match in emphatic fashion.

The Russian entered the clay swing low on confidence after failing to defend major points in Dubai and Indian Wells. Between Doha and Miami, she managed only five wins across four tournaments.

However, Andreeva completely turned her season around on clay by winning 14 of her 16 matches on the surface. Her standout results include the title in Linz and a runner-up finish in Madrid.

The 19-year-old has already built an impressive record at WTA 1000 level. Since the start of 2024, she has reached nine quarterfinals in the category, including three finals, highlighting her remarkable consistency at elite events.

Verdict

Mirra Andreeva carries strong momentum after winning plenty of matches on clay in recent weeks, though fatigue could become a factor. Elise Mertens, however, hasn’t shown enough this week to fully capitalize on that opportunity, which still gives Andreeva the edge, likely in three sets.
