Sorana Cirstea shocked World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka with a comeback win in Rome, matching her best-ever result at the event. She advances to face Linda Noskova, who has enjoyed a favorable draw and seeks her third consecutive clay quarterfinal. Their head-to-head record is tied at 2-2, but Cirstea’s recent clay-court performance and her success over top players make her a slight favorite in this competitive matchup. Cirstea Stuns World No. 1 In Rome

Sorana Cirstea stunned world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Rome with a remarkable 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback victory. She trailed by a set and a break before turning the match around.

With this run, Cirstea has matched her best-ever result in Rome. She previously reached the round of 16 twice, losing to Petra Kvitova in 2012 and Madison Keys in 2024.

The Romanian has continued her strong upward trend since the second half of last season. Earlier this year, she reached at least the third round in all four WTA 1000 events she entered and also won the title in Cluj-Napoca.

Cirstea has reached eight WTA 1000 quarterfinals in her career, but only two of them came on clay, both in Madrid back in 2016 and 2017. She now has a chance to repeat that achievement in Rome.

Noskova Eyes Third Straight Clay Quarterfinal

Linda Noskova advanced to the fourth round in Rome after defeating Oksana Oliynykova 6-1, 6-3. She saved both break points she faced and converted four of her six opportunities in the match.

The Czech has enjoyed a relatively comfortable path this week, facing two opponents ranked outside the top 50 who also lacked experience at this level. That helped her progress through the early rounds with little trouble.

This is Noskova’s best-ever result in Rome after failing to move beyond the third round in her previous three appearances. Even though her level has not matched last season’s highs, she has continued to produce solid results in recent weeks.

She managed back-to-back main draw wins only twice during the first three months of the season. She is now one win away from reaching her third consecutive clay-court quarterfinal. Before 2026, she had reached just one quarterfinal on this surface in her career.

Verdict

Sorana Cirstea has won two of their three meetings this year and arrives with strong confidence and form. Linda Noskova also carries momentum, but matching the Romanian’s level on this surface could be difficult. Cirstea still has the edge, though it may be a tight encounter.
