Jessica Pegula steps into the fourth round of the WTA Rome tournament after a commanding performance and an impressive season, which includes 27 victories and a title in Dubai. Though Anastasia Potapova is enjoying a late-season surge, highlighted by her semifinal run in Madrid, experts believe the physical toll may hinder her in Rome. Pegula leads their head-to-head 5-0 and holds a significant advantage, making her the clear favorite to progress further in the tournament.

Pegula Looks Sharp In Rome Again

Jessica Pegula advanced to the fourth round in Rome with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Rebeka Masarova. It marked the first double-bagel win of her career at tour level.

The American arrived in Rome after a disappointing campaign in Madrid, where she lost to Marta Kostyuk in straight sets. That defeat ended her streak of nine consecutive quarterfinal appearances on tour.

Pegula has still enjoyed an outstanding season overall, winning 27 of her 32 matches. Her strong results include six quarterfinal-or-better finishes, highlighted by the title in Dubai, a semifinal at the Australian Open, and quarterfinal runs in Indian Wells and Miami.

The 32-year-old now holds a 1-1 record in fourth-round matches in Rome. She reached the quarterfinals in 2021 before losing at this stage during her next appearance in 2022.

Potapova Continues Rapid Revival

Anastasia Potapova continued her impressive rise by defeating Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2 to reach the fourth round in Rome. She dropped serve once and broke her opponent four times during the match.

This is Potapova’s best-ever result in Rome. In her previous three main draw appearances at the tournament, she failed to record multiple wins.

The Russian struggled badly during the opening months of the season and was close to dropping out of the top 100 after failing to defend important ranking points.

However, Potapova has transformed her season since the clay swing began, winning 14 of her last 17 matches. Her recent surge includes a final in Linz and a semifinal run in Madrid, the best WTA 1000 result of her career so far.

Verdict

Anastasia Potapova comes in with impressive form and achieved her best-ever WTA 1000 result in Madrid last week. However, the fatigue from that run could become a factor here, which gives Jessica Pegula the edge in this matchup.
