Svitolina Continues Remarkable Season

Elina Svitolina survived a major scare against Anna Bondar in the opening round at the French Open, winning 3-6, 6-1, 7-6. She trailed by a break in the deciding set before mounting a comeback to close out the match.

The Ukrainian has arguably played the best tennis of her career over the last five months, winning 30 of her 37 matches this season. Those performances helped her return to the top 10 rankings for the first time in five years.

Svitolina has played nine tournaments so far in 2026 and recorded multiple wins in six of them. Her standout results include titles in Auckland and Rome, along with a final in Dubai and semifinal runs at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.

After losing in the second round in each of her first two main-draw appearances in Paris in 2013 and 2014, Svitolina has now won 10 consecutive second-round matches at Roland Garros. She most recently reached the quarterfinals here last year.

Quevedo Claims Maiden Grand Slam Win

Kaitlin Quevedo reached the second round at the French Open after defeating local favorite Leolia Jeanjean in two tight tiebreak sets, 7-6, 7-6. After dropping her opening service game, she quickly regained control and closed out the match confidently.

This was Quevedo’s fourth victory of the week after battling through three grueling three-set matches in qualifying. It also marked the first Grand Slam main-draw win of her career.

With the result, the Spaniard extended her winning streak to nine matches following her title run at the W75 event in Saint-Gaudens a few weeks ago. Before this stretch, she had won only two main-draw tour-level matches in her career, both earlier this year in Auckland and Madrid, but failed to progress beyond the second round on those occasions.

Verdict

Quevedo has enjoyed a breakthrough season so far and is now close to making her top-100 debut with another win this week. However, after playing four long matches, fatigue could become a major factor. Against Elina Svitolina, that may prove too difficult to overcome, with the Ukrainian favored to win in straight sets and move further.
