Hailey Baptiste pulled off the tournament’s biggest upset, saving six match points in a dramatic victory over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Madrid semifinals. Baptiste’s surge in performance, including several top-20 wins, marks a career breakthrough as she aims for her first major final. However, her opponent, Mirra Andreeva, has displayed exceptional consistency on clay, boasting a 22–2 record against lower-ranked players this year. While Baptiste’s confidence is rising, Andreeva’s proven form and experience make her the favorite for their upcoming clash.

Baptiste Upsets World Number One

Hailey Baptiste produced a stunning comeback to reach the semifinals in Madrid, defeating defending champion and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. She trailed by a break in the decider and saved six match points before sealing a dramatic victory.

Her path to the semifinals has been anything but easy, facing three consecutive top-20 players. She defeated world No. 9 Jasmine Paolini in straight sets and then beat Belinda Bencic in three sets. This marks the second time this year she has recorded back-to-back top-20 wins, after her run in Abu Dhabi.

This is a major breakthrough for the American, who had reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal only a few weeks ago in Miami. By going a step further in Madrid, she is set to break into the top 30 in the rankings next week.

Earlier this season, she made her maiden tour-level semifinal in Abu Dhabi, where she lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets. With confidence soaring after these big wins, she now looks to push even further this week.

Andreeva Continues Dominant Clay Run

Mirra Andreeva moved into the semifinals in Madrid after defeating Leylah Fernandez 7-6, 6-3. She came back from 1-4 down in the first set and also overturned two break deficits in the second.

This marks her best result in Madrid after losing in the quarterfinals in the previous two editions. It is also her first WTA 1000 semifinal on clay.

The Russian began the clay season lacking confidence after early exits in her title defenses, putting her top-10 spot at risk. However, she has responded strongly by winning 11 of her last 12 matches on clay, showing resilience and stabilizing her ranking.

Andreeva had reached two WTA 1000 semifinals last year and converted both into titles. She now holds a 6-3 record in tour-level semifinals, with all three of her losses coming against top-20 opponents, and will aim to repeat that success this week.

Verdict

Hailey Baptiste has shown growing confidence and ability since the start of 2026, and her recent win over Aryna Sabalenka will add extra belief. However, Mirra Andreeva continues her impressive run on clay, and considering overall ability and experience at this level, she still holds the edge.
