The 2026 Australian Open promises a riveting face-off between Hugo Gaston and Jannik Sinner on January 20. Sinner, with an impressive record of winning 87 of his last 89 matches against players excluding Carlos Alcaraz, remains the favorite. Hugo Gaston has struggled against Top 50 players, losing all nine of such encounters in 2025. This match marks their first head-to-head meeting, with Sinner favored to win convincingly, perhaps bolstered by a -10.5 games handicap. Tune in to watch live and catch all the action.

Jannik Sinner has won 87 of his last 89 matches against players that don’t include Carlos Alcaraz. The Italian is unlikely to give Hugo Gaston much of a chance as he chases a third straight Australian Open title.

Gaston Not a Factor on the ATP Tour

Hugo Gaston dropped out of the Top 100 in July and sneaked back in before the end of the season. He lost all nine matches against Top 50 players in 2025.

The Frenchman hasn’t exceeded the second round of an ATP Tour event since October 2024. He failed to qualify in Brisbane, unable to convert two match points against Matteo Arnaldi.

Gaston got through the qualifiers in Auckland but fell in the first round, winning just 66% of his 1st serves in a 6-3 6-4 defeat to Cameron Norrie.

Sinner Aiming for Third Straight Title in Melbourne

Jannik Sinner won six titles last year, boasting a 58-6 record with four of those defeats coming against Carlos Alcaraz. He reached all four Grand Slam finals, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The World No.2 lost to Alcaraz in the French Open and US Open finals as their dominance over men’s tennis shows no signs of slowing down.

The Italian ended the year by winning the ATP Finals where he didn’t drop a set. He got past Alcaraz 7-6 7-5 in the final, now 6-11 against the Spaniard in the head to head.

Verdict

Hugo Gaston couldn’t have asked for a worse draw at the Australian Open, his chances of beating Jannik Sinner are next to none.

There is little value on offer here, a small stake on Sinner covering the -10.5 games handicap.
