Stefanos Tsitsipas is set to face Shintaro Mochizuki in the 2026 Australian Open. Despite Tsitsipas's recent struggles, including a drop to World No. 33, he is anticipated to secure a victory against Mochizuki, having previously defeated him at the United Cup. Shintaro Mochizuki, now part of the Top 100, has faced difficulty maintaining form, with several losses against top players. Both players aim to prove themselves, but Tsitsipas’s prior success against Mochizuki suggests another straight-sets win is likely.

Stefanos Tsitsipas fell off the radar last year with off court distractions hindering his tennis ability.

The former World No.3 beat Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3 6-4 at the United Cup and can record another straight sets victory at the Australian Open.

Mochizuki Making up the Numbers in Melbourne

Shintaro Mochizuki became a Top 100 player for the first time in October but it failed to have a positive impact.

The 22-year-old lost four of his final five matches in 2025 including a defeat to World No.408 Federico Arnaboldi.

The Japanese player represented his nation at the United Cup, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-3 6-4) and Billy Harris (7-6 6-3)

Mochizuki was unable to qualify in Auckland, giving up 15 break points in a 6-4 6-7 6-2 defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Tsitsipas Slipping Down the Rankings

Stefanos Tsitsipas won the title in Dubai last year to reclaim a spot inside the Top 10. It’s been a rapid decline for the former World No.3 who now finds himself outside the Top 30.

The Greek lost nine consecutive matches against Top 20 players to highlight his downfall against the elite players.

Tsitsipas had a positive start to the year at the United Cup, registering wins against Shintaro Mochizuki (6-3 6-4), Billy Harris (4-6 6-1 7-6) and Taylor Fritz (6-4 7-5).

The good work was overshadowed by a surprise 7-6 7-6 defeat to Aleksandar Vukic in the first round in Adelaide, winning 48% of his 2nd serves.

Verdict

Stefanos Tsitsipas dropped to World No. 33 which highlights the struggles the Greek has faced over the past 10 months.

This is a good situation for the 2023 Australian Open finalist, Tsitsipas to beat Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets.
