Sinner on Fire
Jannik Sinner had a slow start in 2026, losing to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals and Jakub Mensik in the Doha quarter-finals.
The 24-year-old has won all 20 matches since with 18 of those coming in straight sets. He won titles in Indian Wells and Miami without losing a set, then defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo final to reclaim the World No.1 spot.
The Italian began the Madrid Masters by beating qualifiers Benjamin Bonzi 6-7 6-1 6-4 and lmer Moller 6-2 6-3. His serve was broken once in a 6-2 7-5 fourth round victory over Cameron Norrie, only the second break point he has allowed in Spain.
Sinner talked about the conditions after reaching the quarters: “This surface, it’s very different to all the other surfaces, so it’s quite tough to get the right feedback.
“So sometimes you feel like you are not playing your best, but from the outside it seems that you are, and sometimes it is also the opposite. But I’m very happy to be here in the quarters again.”
Jodar Rocketing up the Rankings
Rafael Jodar started the year ranked 165 and appears to be on a mission towards the Top 10. He won his first ATP Tour event in Marrakech, dropping one set.
The 19-year-old eased past Jaume Munar, Ugo Carabelli and Cameron Norrie in Barcelona. He went close against Arthur Fils in the semi-finals, saving 10/13 break points in a 3 sets defeat.
The Spaniard came back to beat Jesper de Jong 2-6 7-5 6-4 in Madrid. He then hammered 5th seed Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-1 and came home strong against the in-form Joao Fonseca, winning 7-6 4-6 6-1.
Jodar continued the trend in the fourth round, steaming past Vit Kopriva 7-5 6-0. He said: "I am super happy with my level today and at this tournament. It is special to play at home, in front of many people that I know and have come to support.
“I am super happy to play another match tomorrow. It is another opportunity. I will have to recover well and prepare the match as best as possible, as it will be another tough match."
Verdict
Rafael Jodar confirmed the hype in Madrid where he has taken out two seeds. Jannik Sinner is a further step up in class however, the Italian to continue winning in straight sets.
