Novak Djokovic, who now chooses his tournaments carefully with a focus on Grand Slams, prepares to face Thiago Agustin Tirante at the Cincinnati Open for the first time. Djokovic, at 39, remains a strong contender despite recent near-misses on the biggest stages. Tirante, climbing from 102 to 50 in the rankings, has shown solid form—especially with key wins in Montreal. While Djokovic’s experience makes him the favorite, Tirante’s momentum could help him keep things close in what promises to be an intriguing first-time clash.

Djokovic Still Searching

Novak Djokovic’s search for a 25th Grand Slam continues. He went close at the Australian Open, beating Jannik Sinner to reach the final where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.

The 39-year-old battled past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Valentin Royer at the French Open. He had a two set lead against Joao Fonseca in the third round but couldn’t close it out, going down in just under five hours.

The Serbian went close again at Wimbledon, getting to the semi-finals after a bruising 5 set win against Felix Auger Aliassime. He ran out of steam against Jannik Sinner, beaten 6-4 6-4 6-4 after winning 34% of his 2nd serves and saving 10/13 break points.

Djokovic spoke before competing in Cincinnati where he is a three-time champion: “I've had some great support here from Chicago and Ohio. The Serbian community is really big.

“That's what I remember actually from the 2023 final and the 2018 final. There were quite a lot of Serbian flags in the stadium. That was really nice.”

Tirante Finding Form on Hard Courts

Thiago Agustin Tirante has improved in 2026, going 27-17 to move from 102 to 50 in the rankings.

All of his best results came on clay, reaching quarter-finals in Rio de Janeiro and Bastad either side of a semi-final appearance in Houston.

The Argentine picked up an impressive win in the second round in Montreal, beating Taylor Fritz 7-5 6-3. He eased past Alexei Popyrin 6-3 6-4 but found Learner Tien a step too far in the fourth round, going down 6-4 6-4.
